Game StoryNEW YORK (Ticker) -- With the New York Knicks having reached a low point in their season, Shandon Anderson led a quartet of season highs. Anderson scored 14 of his 20 points in the third quarter as the slumping Knicks overcame the absence of their top two scorers for a 99-88 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers. "It felt good, not necessarily to contribute, but to win," said Anderson, who made 9-of-14 shots. "We've been struggling and we just needed a win to stop the bleeding and try to get some confidence around here." Losers of six of their last seven games, the Knicks were without Allan Houston, who averages 21 points per game but was sidelined with a chronically sore lower back that is now causing a tingling sensation in his legs. New York also was without forward Keith Van Horn, who averages 16.8 points but is sidelined with a sprained ankle. In their absence, the Knicks received solid games from Anderson, who had been averaging just 5.5 points per game; Charlie Ward, who scored 18 points; Howard Eisley, who added 17 and nine assists; and Michael Doleac, who had 12 points, four blocks and three steals. "I think it shocked all of us when we found out Allan wasn't going to play," Doleac said. "Everyone had to pick it up a little bit." "I talked to the guys about stepping up with the guys we had out and I thought they did," Knicks coach Don Chaney said. In beating the 76ers for the third straight time, the Knicks shot 51 percent (40-of-79), including 10-of-20 from the arc. They had 40 points in the paint and 19 fast-break points, sharing the ball and collecting plenty of easy baskets. "I think (we had) more people movement as opposed to ball movement," said Ward, who made 7-of-10 shots, including four 3-pointers. "Tonight, most of the guys out there are pick-and-roll guys as opposed to 1-on-1 guys. We played off each other." "When you don't have a go-to guy, you have to find offense any way you can," Anderson said. "That was our thing tonight. We found it from a lot of guys who contributed." The Sixers pulled within a point early in the third quarter before Anderson took over, scoring 11 points in less than four minutes to build the lead to 64-52 with 6:20 to go. He drilled a 3-pointer for a 78-60 lead in the final minute of the period. "I thought he played terrific," Doleac said. "From the beginning of the game, he brought that energy and kept it the whole four quarters. It's a lot easier for the rest of us to follow and fall in behind him." Philadelphia trailed by 20 points early in the final period before a late rally cut the deficit to 91-85 with 2:25 to go. But former Sixer Dikembe Mutombo made two free throws and Ward - who scored eight points in the fourth quarter - sank a 3-pointer to seal it. Allen Iverson scored 27 points for the Sixers, who played without frontcourt starters Glenn Robinson (ankle) and Derrick Coleman (knee) for the sixth straight game. Philadelphia fell to 0-3 in the back end of back-to-back games and have two more sets of back-to-backs this week. "It hurts missing key guys, but they were missing key guys also," Iverson said. "We've won big games without key guys. We don't have any excuses."
