Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- The Denver Nuggets treated the largest crowd in the four-year history of the Pepsi Center to a rare victory over the shorthanded Dallas Mavericks. Rookie Carmelo Anthony scored 26 points and Voshon Lenard added 22 as the Nuggets snapped a nine-game losing streak against the Mavericks with a 113-103 victory. A crowd of 19,628 saw Denver post a season high in points and beat Dallas for just the sixth time in the last 31 meetings. "Our confidence level is real high right now," Anthony said. "I'm not saying we can beat anybody; we can compete with anybody. That's one thing I'm saying we can do right now." "They have a good, young team and Anthony looks a little like (Dirk) Nowitzki because he can play inside and outside," Dallas guard Steve Nash said. The Mavericks played without Nowitzki, who has a sprained right ankle, and backup forward Danny Fortson, who was suspended three games for shoving Phoenix rookie Zarko Cabarkapa late in Wednesday's game. "We had enough players to win the game," Mavericks coach Don Nelson said. "Without Dirk Nowitzki and Danny Fortson, we are going to suffer in rebounds." Without Nowitzki, their leading scorer, the Mavericks fell behind, 78-65, on a 3-pointer by Earl Boykins with 3:06 left in the third quarter. Michael Finley capped a 10-0 spurt with a jumper that gave Dallas a 91-87 lead with 6:40 remaining, but Anthony's follow shot with 2:42 to play put the Nuggets ahead for good, 100-98. "The thing I like about us tonight is we kept our composure and ended up with a win," Anthony said. Antoine Walker scored 30 points and Finley added 20 for Dallas, which dropped to 2-6 on the road. Walker, who made 13-of-30 shots, also pulled down 15 rebounds. Marcus Camby, who was shooting just 28 percent from the field, scored six points for the Nuggets but grabbed 15 rebounds. N one was bigger than his offensive rebound with 46 seconds remaining as he followed Anthony's miss to make it 105-100. Three seconds later, Andre Miller converted a pair from the line to give Denver a 107-100 lead. Miller finished with 18 points. "It sounded like the Carrier Dome," said Anthony, who won a national championship last season in his only campaign at Syracuse. "It got a little bit loud." Dallas allowed Denver to shoot 52 percent from the field (39-of-75) while connecting at just over 42 percent (41-of-97). The Mavericks were outrebounded, 47-38. "We are growing together as a team and we are learning about ourselves," Nuggets coach Jeff Bzdelik said.
