Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- The Golden State Warriors finally won a road game. Jason Richardson scored 25 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lift the Warriors to their first road win of the season, a 92-83 triumph over the Phoenix Suns. "It felt good," Richardson said. "We've played some tough teams. We came out here and did a good job as a team, playing defense, sharing the ball, and we got a victory." Mike Dunleavy added 16 points and Nick Van Exel had 12 in his return to the lineup for Golden State. Van Exel missed three games due to pain in his left knee and came off the bench in this one. "I felt pretty good," Van Exel said. "Confidence was feeling good. Just tried to be aggressive." Speedy Claxton, who replaced Van Exel in the starting lineup, chipped in 12 points as the Warriors improved to 1-4 on the road with their third straight win overall. Penny Hardaway led Phoenix with 16 points and Casey Jacobsen and Stephon Marbury each added 14, but the Suns had a five-game home winning streak snapped. "It's no disrespect to the teams that we have lost to at home, but we are supposed to win these game at home," Hardaway said. "They outplayed us from the beginning of the game, and then we have to play from behind in these games that we are supposed to win at home." Golden State scored the game's first six points and never looked back. Phoenix missed 10 of its first 11 shots and finished at 37 percent (30-of-82) from the field. The Warriors had lost seven consecutive games on the road and had not won away from home since March 28. Phoenix's last home loss was against the Los Angeles Lakers on Noveber 1. "It was very important for us to get a road win," Warriors coach Eric Musselman said. "Every team we've played on the road thus far was a playoff team last year, with the exception of Houston, and Houston has gotten off to a good start." Shawn Marion missed his second straight game with a sprained left ankle. Jacobsen filled Marion's spot and made 4-of-7 3-pointers. But he was 0-of-3 inside the arc as the Suns struggled from the field at 36 percent (30-of-282). They had a season-low 35 points in the first half. "Those guys came out and attacked us early, and we didn't make shots when we are supposed to make shots," Marbury said. "That is the way our offense is predicated. When we are making our shots, we are on a roll. But if we're not making shots, then it's going to be a long night." Phoenix starters shot 29 percent (15-of-52) as Amare Stoudemire was just 2-of-6 and scored six points. Golden State outscored Phoenix in the paint, 38-24. Erick Dampier led the way with 11 points and 11 rebounds, notching his eighth straight double-double.
