Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Michael Redd scored 23 points and the Milwaukee Bucks overcame a career-high seven 3-pointers by Mike James to defeat the Boston Celtics, 100-94, and earn a split of their home-and-home series. Both teams fired away from the arc in the fourth quarter, with Milwaukee hitting 4-of-7 3-pointers and Boston 4-of-11. James made three in the final period to surpass his previous career best of six, set on November 2 against Chicago. "It doesn't mean as much at all (because we lost)," James said. "I work hard every day and I shoot enough shots that I expect the shot to go in every time I shoot it." Desmond Mason added a season-high 22 points and Joe Smith had 16 and 11 rebounds for the Bucks, who were beaten on Friday in Boston. "We definitely didn't want to lose to them again, not on back-to-back nights," Bucks guard Erick Strickland said after scoring 11 points. "But we had more energy tonight than we had last night. That's why we lost there. Tonight we came with more energy." Paul Pierce collected 21 points, seven rebounds and seven assists for the Celtics, one night after recording his third career triple-double. Boston had not surrendered 100 points in its first 15 games, the longest streak to start a season in NBA history. "We failed to defend them in the fourth quarter," Pierce said. "In the fourth quarter is when you should be playing your best team defense. Tonight we let down in the fourth." "It was a hard-fought game on both ends of the court," Celtics coach Jim O'Brien added. "They were able to hit some big threes down the stretch that changed the complexion of the game." James' final 3-pointer got the Celtics within 94-93 with 27.2 seconds remaining. Strickland made two free throws with 18.8 seconds to go and Milwaukee nearly blew the lead when Smith fouled Pierce on a 3-point attempt six seconds later. But Pierce missed two of the three free throws. "The free throws down the stretch really hurt us," O'Brien said. "We had been shooting them well. Tonight we just couldn't knock them down, and it cost us." Milwaukee has won 11 of its last 13 home games against Boston. The Bucks have won three four overall, including two straight at the Bradley Center. Tim Thomas sat out with an ankle injury, giving Mason a chance to start. But Milwaukee's bench managed to outscore Boston's reserves, 38-22. The Bucks also had a 36-22 in the paint. Milwaukee built a 34-19 lead midway through the second quarter, but Boston roared back and closed the period with a 26-4 run to take a 45-38 cushion into the locker room. "They made a great run at us," Bucks coach Terry Porter said. "A lot of it was because we turned it over and we stopped moving the ball." Boston led by as many as 12 points in the third before Milwaukee clawed its way back. Consecutive 3-pointers by Toni Kukoc forge a 77-77 tie with 8 1/2 minutes to go and Redd's 3-pointer put the Bucks ahead for good, 85-84, with 3:24 remaining.
