Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Don Nelson is used to seeing his team getting beaten by the Los Angeles Lakers, but this one was too hard to watch. Shaquille O'Neal set the tone early and had 25 points and 19 rebounds as the Lakers rolled to a 114-103 victory over the Dallas Mavericks, who were outplayed in every phase of the game. Los Angeles has won 46 of the last 51 meetings with Dallas and the end of its dominance is nowhere in sight as it has perhaps its best team since the 1980s with four superstars in the starting lineup - O'Neal, Kobe Bryant, Karl Malone and Gary Payton. The Mavericks were handed a 16-point loss by the Lakers in their season opener and were even less effective in this one without star forward Dirk Nowitzki, who has missed four straight games with a sprained ankle. Nelson was vocal from the start and grew frustrated with Dallas' inability to stop the Lakers and some questionable officiating. He was ejected with 7:03 left in the third quarter after yelling at the referees. "It was a tough night for us," said assistant coach Donn Nelson, who took over the team after his father's ejection. "We fought hard, but we didn't fight smart and we didn't play our best basketball. We were hoping to have all cylinders clicking tonight and beat the likes of the Lakers, but it wasn't to be." The Lakers never trailed, opening the game with a 27-11 run. O'Neal scored 10 of his 12 first-quarter points during the burst and Bryant had eight of his 32. "Guys were looking for me early," O'Neal said. "I was getting high-percentage shots and we were getting stops. That's what we do. We always get pumped up for the big teams when we know that these are games that we need." "We felt like we were in control the whole game," Los Angeles coach Phil Jackson added. "We had an idea of what we wanted to do and these guys executed well." Dallas pulled within 44-39 with 4 1/2 minutes left in the second quarter but got no closer as O'Neal and Malone returned to the floor just 48 seconds later. "Those guys have a lot of experience as far as when they get a lead, they get you down and put a foot on your throat," Dallas forward Antawn Jamison said. Los Angeles never was seriously threatened thereafter, methodically dominating Dallas en route to its season-high eighth consecutive win. "The key to the winning streak would be balance and movement," O'Neal said. "The scoring is balanced. On any given night, anyone could be the leading scorer. Everybody's playing with a lot of energy right now." The Lakers (16-3) have won 11 of their last 12 games, including three straight on the road, to take over the best record in the NBA. The Mavericks fell to 10-1 at home. Los Angeles shot just 44 percent (38-of-86) but held Dallas to 37 percent (37-of-99) and had a commanding 55-45 rebounding advantage. "Offensively, we just couldn't put it in the ocean," Jamison said. "Because of what we did offensively, we put ourselves in a bind." Steve Nash scored a season-high 30 points and Antoine Walker added 24 and 12 rebounds for the Mavericks, who have lost three of five following a four-game winning streak. Dallas made a late rally to pull within 102-94 with 2:35 left before intentionally fouling O'Neal, who sank two free throws. The Mavericks fouled O'Neal again with two minutes to go, but the move backfired. The Lakers got to send Bryant to the line for a free throw and kept possession, which led to a three-point play by Malone that sealed the win.
