Game Story

PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- The Philadelphia 76ers were not about to lose to both sides of this week's trade between the Toronto Raptors and Chicago Bulls. Allen Iverson scored 14 of his 35 points in the third quarter and buried a clutch jumper with 47 seconds remaining to lift the 76ers to an 83-82 victory over the Bulls. Chicago completed a six-player trade with Toronto last weekend, acquiring Antonio Davis, Jerome Williams and Chris Jefferies. The Raptors debuted their new lineup Tuesday in a win over Philadelphia, and the Bulls looked to remain unbeaten since the deal at the Wachovia Center. Chicago squandered an 11-point lead in the third quarter but had an 82-79 edge after Eddy Curry made a spinning layup with 2:06 left. Aaron McKie committed a turnover at the other end but redeemed himself with a jumper to bring Philadelphia within 82-81 with 93 seconds remaining. After a fruitless possession for the Bulls, Iverson came through with the first game-winning shot of his career, burying a jumper from the left baseline over rookie Kirk Hinrich. "I'm just trying to play the game smart," Iverson said. "I take whatever the defense gives me." "We were just trying to get some movement with him and taking him off one side," Philadelphia coach Randy Ayers said. "I think the movement helped free him up a little. During my seven years here, I've seen him hit that shot a lot, so thank God he hit it tonight." McKie failed to put away the game when he missed a jumper with nine seconds to go. Chicago was unable to get a shot off on its final possession as Linton Johnson's inbounds pass to Hinrich went off the backboard and bounced away as time expired. Samuel Dalembert scored 13 points and Iverson grabbed a season-high nine rebounds for the Sixers, who shot under 40 percent (32-of-81) but held the Bulls to 34 percent (28-of-94). Derrick Coleman had 11 rebounds in his return from a strained knee, but Philadelphia played without Marc Jackson and Willie Green, who are sidelined with injuries. "The injuries are just that," Iverson said. "We understand that we got to play with what we got. We can cry about it, but it doesn't do any good because the team that we are playing against doesn't care about all that." Jamal Crawford scored 22 points and Curry finished with 16 and 10 rebounds as Chicago lost for the eighth time in nine games. "We have to come up with these wins," Crawford said. "That loss there hurts more than a 25-point loss. These games are heart-breakers." The Bulls have split their first two games under coach Scott Skiles, who was hired Friday. "We're a little disorganized. We have a lot of new guys on this team and a new coach," said Hinrich, who had 14 points. "We had a good effort tonight, we just fell short. We want to win. We're not into moral victories." The Bulls had their largest lead at 53-42 with 6:09 remaining in the third quarter, but the Sixers responded with 11 straight points, including seven from Iverson. Iverson turned a steal into a layup with five seconds left in the quarter to give Philadelphia its first lead since the opening seconds at 62-60. "Philadelphia really picked up their effort in the third quarter and we just didn't respond as well as we ultimately are going to," Skiles said. "I may be putting guys in unfair positions that I won't as time goes on once I really get to know the team."
