Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Having broken the team record for consecutive losses, the Orlando Magic are now threatening the NBA record. The Magic suffered their 19th straight loss, falling apart in the third quarter of a 110-97 setback to the Dallas Mavericks, who got 24 points and 16 rebounds from Antoine Walker. Orlando's home loss to San Antonio on Friday broke the franchise record of 17 straight losses set in the 1991-92 season. One night later, the Magic hung around for 2 1/2 quarters before unraveling against the talented Mavericks. "That's been the story for us so far this year," Magic coach Johnny Davis said. "We are getting close and we've been competitive, but not enough to get it done down the stretch." "No one in this locker room ever imagined that we'd start off like this," said Magic forward Juwan Howard, who had 24 points and 10 rebounds. The Magic became the sixth team to lose 19 in a row and the first since the Vancouver Grizzlies from November 7-December 13, 1996. Just four teams in league history have had longer losing streaks. "With them right now, it's just contagious," Walker said. "I think when things start going bad for them, they kind of just sulk a little bit, and when you lose 19 in a row, that's what happens." Orlando returns home to face Phoenix on Monday. If the Magic lose that game, they will tie the 1972-73 Philadelphia 76ers and 1993-94 Dallas Mavericks for the third-longest slide ever. The 1995-96 Grizzlies and 1997-98 Denver Nuggets share the all-time mark of 23. "We've just got to go out there and get that one victory and get that monkey off our back," said Howard, a former Maverick. "I tell you, that monkey's heavy." "Once they finally get a win, they will be able to go out there and play more freely," said Mavericks guard Michael Finley, who scored 22 points. "I think it's wearing on them mentally and you can see it in their expressions sometimes." Trailing 62-56 at halftime, the Magic closed to 64-63 on a 3-pointer by Tracy McGrady, who scored 27 points. But Finley answered with a 3-pointer and added a three-point play for a 71-65 lead. That was enough to swing the momentum. Dallas closed the third quarter with a 16-7 surge for an 89-76 lead, and Orlando got no closer than nine points in the final period. "Nobody wants to be the team that they come off the losing streak against," Walker said. "When you lose 18 games in a row, they're bound to get one, and we knew they wanted to get a victory," said Dallas forward Antawn Jamison, who scored 18 points off the bench. "We weren't coming in thinking it was a guaranteed win." Rookie Josh Howard had 13 points and eight rebounds for the Mavericks, who shot 52 percent (45-of-86) from the field and outrebounded the Magic, 55-36.
