Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Tim Duncan and Rasho Nesterovic presented too tall an order. Duncan had 21 points and 19 rebounds and Nesterovic added a season-high 21 and 13 as the San Antonio Spurs overwhelmed the Miami Heat, 86-70. It marked the first time this season that Nesterovic gave the Spurs the same look they had during their 2002-03 championship campaign, when 7-footers Duncan and the now-retired David Robinson lined up alongside each other. "We have a better feel for each other now and I think that's part of playing together consistently and learning each other's moves on the court," Nesterovic said. "He is a very skilled player and is getting into a really good understanding of our game plan," Duncan said. "He did an excellent job of finishing plays and applying stops at their end. He had a strong all-around performance." The 7-footers controlled both ends of the floor, helping San Antonio race to a 24-13 lead after one period and holding Miami to 32.5 percent shooting (13-of-40) in the first half. Duncan (five) and Nesterovic combined for eight of San Antonio's nine blocks. "The system we use here allows me to get into the flow and get comfortable with doing what's necessary inside and applying pressure at the other end," Nesterovic said. "It's a matter of understanding my role and what it's going to take to be effective." "It's still a young relationship, but it's progressing to a high level," Duncan added. "We're really starting to understand each other's strengths and weaknesses." Tony Parker had 10 points and 11 assists for the Spurs, who never trailed as they swept the season series and beat the Heat for the fifth straight time. Lamar Odom scored 17 points for Miami, which was held to 75 points or fewer for the sixth time this season. The Heat have lost three in a row and seven of nine. "When you play a team with the size of San Antonio, it gets hard for us," Heat coach Stan Van Gundy said. "When it gets hard for us, we lose confidence. That drains our energy, and I didn't like that tonight." Duncan made three straight baskets at the end of the first quarter, giving the Spurs a 24-13 lead. He capped a 19-point first-half with a 3-pointer at the buzzer, extending the advantage to 45-29. "We attacked inside right from the beginning," Duncan said. "We didn't relent and stayed with our game plan." Nesterovic carried the interior offense in the second half with 10 points. The Spurs led by as many as 20 points and by at least double digits for all but 50 seconds.
