Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- The Boston Celtics wobbled down the stretch but managed to avoid another collapse. Paul Pierce recorded 33 points and 10 assists as the road-weary Celtics snapped a four-game losing streak, holding on for a 116-111 victory over the Denver Nuggets. "I told the guys in the locker room, no excuses about the last two days and traveling today," said Pierce, whose team could not get out of Boston on Saturday due to a major snowstorm and did not arrive in Denver until four hours before the game. Coming off a 110-106 loss to Phoenix in which they squandered a 29-point lead in the third quarter, the Celtics wasted a 16-point lead in this one as the Nuggets tied it, 96-96, on a dunk by rookie Carmelo Anthony with 7:15 left. The Celtics responded with a 9-0 spurt, opening a 105-96 lead on Mike James' jumper with 5:07 remaining, then held off another Nuggets' push in the final minutes. Rodney White hit two 3-pointers in an eight-second span to pull Denver within 113-111 with 28 seconds left. But James hit two foul shots four seconds later and Pierce split two from the line eight seconds remaining to clinch the win. "It was a good win for us," Celtics coach Jim O'Brien said. "I thought our guys kept their composure and we were mentally tough down the stretch. It means a lot to win here." White tied a career high with 23 points for the Nuggets, who were trying for their first seven-game winning streak in 14 years. Denver could not overcome poor early defense as the Celtics scored 32 points in the opening quarter and 62 in the first half, settling for a nine-point lead at the intermission. "They outhustled us and they just outplayed us," Nuggets coach Jeff Bzdelik said. "Some of our guys didn't react defensively. We had a defensive scheme in place, but we just walked through it. We gave Pierce a lot of easy looks." Boston got strong games from Eric Williams, who scored a season-high 21 points, and Jiri Welsch, who chipped in a career-best 19. Welsch's previous career high was nine points on Friday. "Jiri played great today," Pierce said. "He is an unselfish player and we've been trying to get him to shoot more." Voshon Lenard scored 20 points and Anthony added 17 for the Nuggets, who also had a seven-game home winning streak stopped. "We started off slow and they won the game," Anthony said. "The plan was to double Paul Pierce early. Things didn't work out."
