Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- While the Los Angeles Lakers are rolling at home, the New York Knicks are self-destructing on the road. Kobe Bryant scored 21 points as the Lakers ran their home winning streak to 27 games with a 98-90 victory over the slumping Knicks. Facing the team that last beat them on their home court in the regular season, the Lakers won their 10th straight game - a streak that started with a blowout win in New York on November 19. They overcame a slow start, improved to 12-0 at Staples Center and placed five in double figures including Karl Malone, who scored 20 points. "We just continue to get better," Bryant said. "We were stalling a little bit. As far as our execution goes and improvement go we continue to get better and keep plugging at it. We are happy where we are." "I thought that we played a really solid second half," Lakers coach Phil Jackson added. "We had a little trouble converting and shootiing the ball. A lot of guys were hesitant about shooting the ball and we managed to sustain that lead even though it wasn't a comfortable one." For the Knicks, it was their season-high fifth straight loss, with four coming on a five-game West Coast road trip that ends Wednesday in Utah. Playing without leading scorer Allan Houston (sore right knee), the Knicks got a season-high 26 points from replacement Shandon Anderson. New York faced a 53-41 deficit at halftime and a 76-66 hole through three periods. They got close several times in the fourth but hurt themselves with poor shot selection, missed open shots and sloppy play, dropping to 3-10 away from home. "We didn't take care of the ball," Anderson said. "We knew they were gonna reach, they're gonna slap. Karl Malone, Bryon Russell and those guys - they've been doing it for years. It's one of those things where you gotta know your personnel." "I think the effort was there," New York forward Keith Van Horn added. "We played our butts off, but ultimately it comes down to wins. It's not about having a great effort. It's about having a great effort and winning the basketball game." Houston scored a career-high 53 points February 16 in leading New York to a 117-110 victory and tried to play Tuesday. Without Houston for the second straight game, the Knicks got off to a quick start before getting outscored, 35-16, in the second quarter. New York began both the third and fourth periods decently as it used runs of 10-4 and 8-2 to keep the contest competitive. But after Kurt Thomas' basket made it 87-81 with 4:04 remaining, jumpers by Malone and Bryant sealed the win as the Lakers improved the NBA's best record to 18-3. Shaquille O'Neal collected 18 points and 15 rebounds while Gary Payton added 17 points as the Lakers won despite shooting 38 percent (14-of-36) in the second half. The Lakers also had just four turnovers over the final 36 minutes and Payton felt that was key to their latest victory. "We are out there thinking about protecting the ball," Payton said. "We came out a little sloppy and they took to us in the first quarter. Then we came back, Phil got us a little bit and when we start protecting the ball a little bit and get good shots I do not think too many teams can beat us."
