Game Story

SACRAMENTO, California (Ticker) -- The Sacramento Kings are giving opponents a second chance in the third quarter. The Kings played another poor third period in a 105-95 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers, nearly blowing a 21-point lead before being stabilized by Peja Stojakovic. Stojakovic scored 26 points, including a 3-pointer with 1:04 left in the third quarter after the Clippers had closed to 77-74. The Kings led by at least six points throughout the final period, but their problems in the third period remain. In each of their last three games, Sacramento has come out of halftime with very little spark. It was outscored 25-15 by Minnesota in Friday's overtime loss and 27-17 by Indiana in Sunday's narrow win. "It seems like something we have been doing - come in with a nice little lead at halftime, and (it) seems like as soon as we stretch it, we kinda let down and let them back in the game," said Kings center Brad Miller, who scored 12 points. "That's something that we have to get better on." Led by Corey Maggette, the Clippers held a 33-25 advantage in the third period in this game, erasing almost all of a 65-44 deficit. "It's a trend that we've talked about time after time," Kings coach Rick Adelman said. "We have to play together. We get the lead and then we get so casual, like it's just going to happen." Mike Bibby scored 17 points and Anthony Peeler added 14 off the bench for the Kings, who went 7-1 on an eight-game homestand. They have won 15 of the last 16 meetings with the Clippers. "We should have went 8-0, but we played good and we need to take that on the road with us," said Bibby, whose club plays four of its next five games away from home. Maggette scored 27 points for Los Angeles, which trailed 57-43 at halftime. Despite the surge, the Clippers have lost nine of 11 overall and their last 10 visits to Sacramento. Arco Arena again was sold out but less raucous than usual. While the Clippers were making their comeback in the third quarter, the 17,317 fans were a non-factor. "It was real quiet," reserve center Tony Massenburg said. "People get used to this place rocking every night. You're not going to get that against the Clippers. Nothing against them, they're just not the Lakers or someone like that." Elton Brand had 15 points and 13 rebounds and rookie center Chris Kaman added 14 and 14 for the Clippers. "We played well at times. We just need to put it together," said Brand, who was playing his second game since returning from a broken foot. "I'm not 100 percent yet. But (the) coaches are getting me ready for the long run, and I will be." In the fourth quarter, Stojakovic made jumpers to push the lead to 92-84, 95-86 and 101-88 with 3:08 to play. That was enough to turn back the Clippers, who shot just 39 percent (32-of-82) from the field. "We're not shooting the ball well, and that's been our Achilles heel right now," Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy said. "We just need to make some shots."
