Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Tim Duncan had little trouble making shots down the stretch of an ugly offensive game. Duncan scored 13 of his 22 points during a decisive run in the fourth quarter as the San Antonio Spurs extended their winning streak to five games with a 71-67 victory over the Houston Rockets in a defensive battle. The teams set a dubious NBA record by combining for 55 points in the first half, including a franchise-low 30 for the Spurs. They nearly matched that total in the fourth quarter, scoring 25 points as Duncan led San Antonio's comeback. "Those were two very good defensive clubs running into each other," Duncan said. "They did a heck of a job on me. It seemed like three or four guys were on me whenever I got the ball. I was lucky to get a couple to fall near the end." The Rockets had a 55-50 lead with 6:45 remaining before the Spurs went on an 18-8 run. Duncan had two jumpers and a pair of three-point plays during the spurt, keying a rare display of offense for San Antonio. Bruce Bowen gave San Antonio the lead for good, 63-61, on a 3-pointer with 2:30 remaining. He was fouled on the play but launched an airball on the free throw. Duncan extended the lead on a hook shot with 1:52 left and, after Houston's Steve Francis made two free throws, completed a three-point play following a spinning layup around center Yao Ming. Cuttino Mobley and Francis each made a layup in the final 19 seconds as the Rockets narrowly avoided the franchise-record low of 66 points. "It was like two heavyweight fighters punching it out," Spurs forward Robert Horry said. "It was ugly for the fans, but we liked it like that. It was a big win for us because we are building and it was a stepping stone." Tony Parker had 13 points and 10 assists and Manu Ginobili added 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Spurs, who overcame 32 percent (27-of-84) shooting. "It was a very competitive game, obviously," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. "Both teams played very good defense. Neither one of us could make a shot or take care of the ball. Luckily, it happened to both of us on the same night or one of us would have been behind by 20 points." San Antonio has won five straight following a four-game slide and posted its fourth consecutive road win, handing Houston its second loss in 10 games at the Compaq Center. Mobley scored 19 points and Francis finished with 18 on 7-of-22 shooting for the Rockets, who shot 40 percent (30-of-75) and attempted just six free throws on their home floor. "San Antonio had a lot to do with why we played poorly," Houston coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "They defend as well as anyone in the league. We got their worst offensive game and still couldn't find a way to win. We seemed a bit dead tonight." The Spurs made just 11-of-21 free-throw attempts. Yao had his worst game of the season, scoring eight points on 4-of-13 shooting in the face of constant double- and triple-teams.
