Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Sam Cassell, Kevin Garnett and the Minnesota Timberwolves appear to be comfortable away from the Target Center. Cassell scored 25 points and Garnett added 23 and 16 rebounds as the Timberwolves defeated the Washington Wizards, 110-91, for their fourth straight road victory. Latrell Sprewell scored 21 points and reserve Gary Trent added a season-high 16 for Minnesota, which is just 4-5 at home but a Western Conference-best 9-4 on the road. "We're renegades," Garnett said. "We figure they hate us on the road, so that's more motivation than anything. We don't want them to start hating us at home, though. We'll get that right, but one thing at a time." "We can't win a game at home," Cassell said. "I told Flip (Minnesota coach Flip Saunders) maybe we should wear our blue uniforms at home and just throw away the white ones, because we're not playing good basketball at home." Minnesota held just an 84-81 edge before Garnett nailed a pair of free throws with 9:46 remaining to start a 14-2 run over the next 5 1/2 minutes. The Wizards got no closer than 13 points down the stretch. "That's him. That's what he does," Cassell said of Garnett, who posted his 18th double-double of the season. "I won't get excited until I see him get 30 and 30 - that's when I'll get excited. And I think he's going to get it this year. Once he does that, we'll have to whip out a bottle of champagne and celebrate." The Timberwolves shot 56 percent (47-of-84) and limited the Wizards to 41 percent (35-of-85). "Overall, we executed really well," Saunders said. "We've been shooting the ball pretty well and we just got the ball to the people we needed to down the stretch." Larry Hughes scored 16 points to pace the Wizards, who have lost nine of their last 11 contests. "We missed some shots but we kept it within a two-possession, three-possession game," Hughes said. "After that we didn't make shots, they got a couple of easy layups and we tried to scramble the game up a little, but it worked against us." Guard Gilbert Arenas, who had missed the previous eight games with an abdominal injury, had nine points and four assists in 24 minutes. "It was a little sore out there, especially once I sat down," Arenas said. "I couldn't do everything that I wanted to do but at least I got to see where I was health-wise and the way my mobility was." "He's trying," Wizards coach Eddie Jordan said of Arenas. "He's not nearly where he was before he got hurt, and even if you're healthy, it's hard to come back and get into a rhythm." Minnesota led by as many as 19 points late in the first quarter and took a 39-23 lead into the second period. It was the team's highest-scoring quarter of the season. Washington stormed back to take a 44-43 lead on a follow shot by Brendan Haywood with 4:41 left in the second quarter. Ervin Johnson countered with a layup 13 seconds later to give Minnesota the lead for good. "I told the team after that game ... you have to experience 15 minutes of hell before you can enjoy heaven," Jordan said. "If we're not there, we're close to it. We're going to stay positive, we're going to work hard, and everyone knows what doesn't kill you makes you stronger."
