Game Story

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- The New York Knicks have a legitimate star in Allan Houston. The Washington Wizards do not. Houston tied a season high with 39 points, including the go-ahead jumper with 18 seconds left, as the Knicks rallied for an 89-87 victory over the Wizards, who have lost four straight games. A 10-year veteran and two-time All-Star, Houston carried the Knicks. He made 12-of-19 shots and 12-of-12 free throws, matching his performance against Sacramento on November 9. "I think mentally I feel more comfortable in that situation," said Houston, who leads the NBA in free-throw percentage. "I don't think about failure. I just take it up a notch." While the Knicks leaned on Houston, the Wizards were without injured guards Jerry Stackhouse and Gilbert Arenas, their two best players. Using six players with three years experience or less, coach Eddie Jordan felt his team received an unfavorable whistle. "You talk to the officials with respect, you deserve an honest answer," said Jordan, who almost certainly will be fined by the NBA for his words. "When 18,000 people and two teams can see obvious calls, how come three guys can't see it? You get the same weak excuses every night - 'I didn't see it, I didn't see it.' You got three guys out there supposed to do their jobs and they didn't see things. "You get young teams that don't have marquee players that don't get the right calls and that's how it goes. It's a shame." There were five ties and three lead changes in the last 3 1/2 minutes. Two free throws by Etan Thomas, who had 16 points and 10 rebounds, pulled Washington into an 84-84 tie with 32 seconds to go before Houston went to work. Taking a pass on the left wing, the 6-6 Houston drew 6-10 Jared Jeffries on a switch. But the second-year forward backed off a step and Houston took advantage, drilling a jumper. "I just made a hard dribble," he said. "I don't think he meant to step back." "Allan Houston is a very, very good player, a tremendous player," Jordan said. "He made big buckets." Charlie Ward scored 13 points for the Knicks, who have won two in a row following a six-game slide. Antonio McDyess added 12 and 11 rebounds as he supplanted Kurt Thomas as the starting power forward. "It's still new to me," said Thomas, who had seven points and six boards as he came off the bench for the first time since April 8, 2001. "It's gonna take some time to get into my new role, but as long as we win, I'm happy. I've done it before in my career." "I think in the last couple of years he's been a starter and that's the tough part," Knicks coach Don Chaney said before the game. "It requires an adjustment." McDyess and Kurt Thomas were together on the floor down the stretch and both made big plays. McDyess had a follow slam and a fast-break dunk to give the Knicks an 84-82 lead with 38 seconds remaining. After Houston's jumper, Kurt Thomas stepped in and drew a charge from a driving Larry Hughes with 15 seconds to go, then hit 1-of-2 free throws at the other end. Hughes fired an airball on a leaning 3-pointer and Ward sealed it with two from the line. "Drawing contact is what I've been doing," said Hughes, who scored 19 points but was called for a pair of charges in the final period. "Some nights I shoot eight free throws, some nights I shoot one. I'm getting in there; I'm definitely drawing contact first." Hughes scored the first eight points of a 13-0 run that gave Washington a 53-43 lead midway through the third period. But Houston scored seven points in the final three minutes of the quarter, cutting the deficit to 62-61.
