Game StoryBOSTON (Ticker) -- The shorthanded Boston Celtics were no match for Kevin Garnett and the Minnesota Timberwolves. Garnett and Sam Cassell each scored 27 points in a 116-95 blowout, snapping the Boston Celtics' five game winning streak. "We knew they went through a trade today, so we wanted to come out with some energy," Garnett said. "We have all been in that situation and understand, and you can be either really up or really down." Boston dressed only nine players due to Monday's trade in which the Celtics acquired controversial swingman Ricky Davis along with centers Chris Mihm and Michael Stewart from Cleveland for center Tony Battie and forwards Kedrick Brown and Eric Williams. "We're trying to take this to a level where we can consistently compete for an Eastern Conference championship and get to the finals," Celtics coach Jim O'Brien said. "Every move we make is directed towards that goal." Walter McCarty led the Celtics with 17 points, but it wasn't enough as Boston had its three-game winning streak against Minnesota halted. Paul Pierce, who scored a season-high 41 points on Saturday, just missed a triple-double with 15 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds for the Celtics. "It was tough tonight," he said. "Whenever you go through a trade, it takes a lot out of you, and I think that was the case for a lot of us tonight." The game was billed as "Cedric Maxwell Night." Boston honored the former Celtic during a halftime ceremony and retired his No. 31. Maxwell spent eight seasons with the Celtics, where he was a member of the 1981 and 1984 NBA championship teams and was named 1981 NBA Finals MVP. Before the game players wore green warmup shirts with No. 31 on the back in honor of Maxwell. But when the game began the Celtics seemed lethargic. Boston committed turnovers in each of its first three possessions as Minnesota built a 12-3 lead with 7:21 remaining in the first period. "We have to come out and play," said Celtics forward Vin Baker, who scored 12 points. "We won five games in a row with the same starting five that's been on the floor." Pierce, suffering from a deep thigh bruise and a bruise on his left shin, nearly missed the game. His poor health showed in his performance as he hit just 6-of-18 shots. "The leg is tender. I was not going to play tonight, but since we were shorthanded I took a couple of pain pills," Pierce said. With Pierce hurting, the Celtics struggled on offense for most of the night and shot 42 percent (35-of-84). The Timberwolves shot a torrid 63 percent (49-of-78). Garnett had his way with the Boston frontcourt as he grabbed 12 rebounds and passed for seven assists. Cassell also proved to be a tough matchup, dishing out nine assists while hitting 12-of-17 shots. "We just came out with that intensity and tried to execute and do what we needed to do on the road," Cassell said. "That's all we did. We didn't do anything spectacular."
