Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Kenyon Martin and the New Jersey Nets are back to playing their style of basketball. Martin had 22 points and 14 rebounds and New Jersey got a season-high 18 steals to pull out a 97-87 victory over the Washington Wizards and climb over .500 for the first time since November 1. "We are all going out there and doing what we are supposed to do," Martin said. "(Coach Byron Scott) said to get the ball inside and we did. We got a couple of easy baskets and got up and down the court." Aggressive defense and a transition offense, the key characteristics of the Nets in winning the Eastern Conference title in each of the past two seasons had been absent early in the season. But the Nets regained their form in this one, forcing 25 turnovers and outrunning Washington on the break, 23-9. Richard Jefferson had 18 points for New Jersey and Kerry Kittles added 16 as the Nets extended their home winning streak to a season-high five games. "I think we had a good rhythm going and our pressure really disrupted them," Kittles said. "It allowed us to get some easy points. That is when we excel as a team." Rookie Jarvis Hayes led the Wizards with 22 points and Larry Hughes added 17, but it wasn't enough as Washington lost its sixth consecutive game in New Jersey. Washington went on a 11-3 run midway through the third quarter to cut the Nets' lead to 57-54 with 4:29 left in the period. But New Jersey closed the quarter with a 16-5 spurt. "We started making shots," said Wizards coach Eddie Jordan, a former Nets assistant. "We were aggressive. We pretty much said, 'How bad can it get?' Our guys responded." "This is a game of runs," Scott said. "They made a run in the third quarter and we were able to withstand it. We kept playing and we got our run." Injuries continue to plague the Nets. Center Aaron Williams missed the game with a pulled groin, suffered in Wednesday's game. Lucious Harris left Friday's game in the third quarter after aggravating a left ankle injury and did not return. With Williams sidelined, Rodney Rogers had one of his best games this season. Rogers scored eight points and had season-highs of six rebounds and four assists. Nets guard Jason Kidd added 10 points, surpassing 10,000 in his career, and added 11 assists. "The Nets almost make you feel like you don't belong in the league," Jordan said. "That pressure and fast break, and the fact that they are a heck of a passing team, that I just noticed. I didn't know that when I was with the Nets." Washington center Brendan Haywood sat out the game due to a sinus infection. Jared Jeffries had his second straight double-digit rebounding effort with 12 and nine points. There were plenty of rebounds to grab in the first quarter. The Wizards shot 26 percent (6-of-23) in the opening period as the Nets built a 30-14 cushion. "It's just inexperience," Jordan said. "We've got Stevie Blake at point guard, a rookie. We've got Jarvis Hayes, a rookie. We've got Jared Jeffries, who missed almost all of last year with a knee injury. He might as well be a rookie." New Jersey capitalized on the Wizards' inexperience to force a lot of turnovers but the Nets played sloppy at times as well. Washington kept the game close by converting 23 turnovers into 22 points.
