Game StoryHOUSTON (Ticker) -- Yao Ming and the Houston Rockets jumped out to an early lead and cruised to their 10th victory in 12 games at the Toyota Center. Yao had 21 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks to help Houston to a 99-85 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers. "He is a terrific player," Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy said of Yao. "He had a great performance. I thought he did everything they wanted him to do. He's probably one of the top five centers in the world." "When we play like that we can use all of our advantages," Yao said through an interpreter. "When all the players are connected we play as a team." Elton Brand scored the first basket, 26 seconds into the game, but Houston went on a 8-0 run and never trailed thereafter. Cuttino Mobley led Houston with 22 points and Steve Francis added 16. "It all starts with Yao," Mobley said. "When he commands the double team it helps us open up for our shots. We were able to penetrate and finish." Quentin Richardson led the Clippers with 20 points as they had their season-high four-game winning streak snapped. Corey Maggette added 16 points and Brand finished with 11 and 11 rebounds. Houston shot 58 percent (21-of-36) in the first half to build a 51-41 lead. Yao scored 17 in the half on 7-of-9 shooting. Mobley added 12, making 5-of-7 shots. "We just moved the ball and got it to the open man," Yao said. "We got easy baskets because of that and that led to a high field-goal percentage." Richardson hit a 3-pointer with 3:33 left in the third to cut the Rockets' lead to 68-61. But Houston closed the quarter with a 14-6 spurt to gain a 72-67 advantage. Houston shot 49 percent overall (39-of-79) while the Clippers struggled at 36 percent (32-of-88). The Rockets outrebounded Los Angeles, 48-43, and held a 42-26 edge in the paint. "We didn't come close to doing anything we wanted to do," Dunleavy said. "Houston showed their ability and we didn't play smart and they just beat us." "We didn't play well and we didn't execute our offense," Richardson said. "We've been playing well but now we have to pick it up on the rest of this trip. Houston came ready to play and we didn't." Despite their hot shooting, the Rockets fell short of 100 points for the eighth straight game. Houston has scored 100 points or more three times this season, one of those occasions was a 105-90 victory over the Clippers on November 24. The Clippers have lost four straight games against Houston and six consecutive road games (2-7).
