Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Austin Croshere and Ron Artest saved their best for last. Croshere scored all 12 of his points in the fourth quarter and Artest nailed a go-ahead 3-pointer with just under four minutes to go as the Indiana Pacers rallied to defeat the rival Detroit Pistons, 80-75. Artest collected 22 points - nine in the fourth period - and nine rebounds and Jermaine O'Neal added 19 and 11 for the Pacers, who posted their ninth victory in 10 home games. They improved to 11-3 at the Conseco Fieldhouse this season. Indiana trailed, 62-52, before O'Neal dunked with 8:26 left to commence an 11-2 burst over the next three minutes. Croshere had seven points during the run. "We had picked up the intensity," Croshere said. "Then it was a blocked shot, a loose ball, a fast-break layup, some defensive stops ... and now they start thinking, 'Here we go,' and their shots aren't falling, and we were able to take advantage." "Austin Croshere, what an asset for our team," Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. "It's tough at times with matchups figuring out who to play, but he's making a strong case for himself." The Pacers took their first lead since early in the first quarter, 68-66, on Artest's shot from the arc with 3:51 left. The Pacers had missed their first 11 3-pointers. Indiana, which became the first team to win 20 games this season, scored 33 points in the fourth quarter, matching its total for the entire first half. It was the most points the Pacers had scored in the fourth quarter this season. "With the game on the line, they outtoughed us," Pistons coach Larry Brown said. "I thought Croshere played well. He drove to the inside instead of shooting on the outside. The bottom line is we played three quarters well enough to win. The fourth quarter they dictated the way the game was going." Chauncey Billups had 13 points and Richard Hamilton and Ben Wallace added 12 apiece for Detroit, which lost for the fifth time in six games. Wallace also grabbed 11 rebounds. The Pistons are 0-2 under Brown against Carlisle, who was fired in the offseason despite leading Detroit to back-to-back Central Division titles. "They are the two-time defending division champs," Croshere said. "They are definitely a team we are trying to dethrone. It was a great opportunity to go up 2-0 on them." Detroit held a 26-19 advantage after one quarter and took a 44-33 lead into the break. "We never met force with force down the stretch like we had been doing the whole night," Atkins said. "In the first half is where we let a great opportunity go. We had a chance to put them away. We could have been up by at least 20 points, but instead we go in at halftime only up 11. That gave them some confidence coming into the second half."
