Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- After Kobe Bryant endured a long afternoon in Colorado, he returned to Los Angeles in time to make for a long night for the Denver Nuggets. Bryant buried a jumper from the top of the key as time expired, leading the Lakers to a dramatic 101-99 triumph over the Nuggets. After spending most of the day in a courthouse in Eagle, Colorado attending hearings in his felony sexual assault trial, Bryant rushed back to the Staples Center, arriving after the game had started. He entered at the start of the second quarter and finished with 13 points on 5-of-14 shooting but made the shot that mattered most. After rookie Carmelo Anthony tied the game with two free throws with 2.5 seconds left, Los Angeles called timeout. Devean George's inbounds pass came to Bryant at the top of the key, where he faked Jon Barry into the air and calmly swished the game-winner as time expired. "I had a good feeling about it," Bryant said. "I haven't hit a game-winner in a while. ... Once I got (Barry) in the air I knew he was done. I felt I got a good look and in those situations you have the advantage because the defender really doesn't know the clock." "The first option was to go to Gary (Payton)," George said. "The second option was to dump it in to Shaquille (O'Neal) or go to Kobe at the top of the key. The first two options were taken away but Kobe wasn't." Nuggets coach Jeff Bzdelik thought Bryant's play was special. "It's just greatness," Bzdelik said. "Jon was right on him. We knew he would ball fake, he always does, but he made the shot. Give him credit, that's why he's great." "If anybody can go through something that he is going through and come out and play the game of basketball and hit a game-winning shot, it would be Kobe," Barry said. "He's mentally strong and a great player and made a great shot." Bryant admitted the day was trying. "It has been a long day," he said. "A long and draining day. But I wanted to get here and play. There was no doubt I would get back. ... I've been going since 4:30 a.m. but that's life. You just have to struggle along with it." "It is extremely courageous to come here and be with us after taking care of his personal business during the day," Lakers guard Derek Fisher said. "That is not something that is really easy to do. He came and gave us the best effort he could give us." O'Neal had 26 points, 11 rebounds and six assists for Los Angeles, which blew a 14-point fourth-quarter lead. Bryant finished with 13 and Payton had 10 and 11 assists. Anthony led Denver with 24 points. The Lakers made due without Bryant early, closing the first quarter with a 12-3 run that put them ahead 27-19 after 12 minutes. Bryant was inserted to start the second quarter and Denver opened the period with a 17-8 burst to take the lead. George got Los Angeles back on track with a 3-pointer off a feed from Bryant, a jumper that ignited a 14-6 run. George had 10 points in the quarter and the Lakers led 57-47 at the half. Los Angeles led by as many as 19, 72-53 with 5:21 to go in the third quarter. The lead was still 90-76 with 8:08 to go but a 3-pointer by Anthony sparked a 23-9 burst. Anthony, Barry and Rodney White sank 3-pointers in the spurt.
