Game Story

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Jason Williams returned to the lineup and his teammates made the transition as easy as possible. Mike Miller had 18 points and five teammates reached double figures as the Memphis Grizzlies cruised to a 97-83 triumph over the Miami Heat. Williams had missed the last nine games with back spasms but was able to ease back into the lineup as the Grizzlies made short work of the Heat. Williams finished with just three points - on 1-of-5 shooting - but had six assists in 19 minutes. "Jason came back and played 19 minutes and he felt good," Memphis coach Hubie Brown said. "He looked good." "It just felt good to be back out there with my teammates," Williams said. Lorenzen Wright had 14 points, Pau Gasol 13 and James Posey, Stromile Swift and Bonzi Wells chipped in 12 apiece as the Grizzlies ran their franchise-record home winning streak to six games. Memphis led 35-24 after 12 minutes and cruised in the second half. The Grizzlies already have established a franchise record for wins in December with eight and the 15 wins prior to the All-Star Game already are a team record. "We would not know about (the records) if you guys didn't tell us all the time," Wright said. "We just want to compete and come out the same way every night and try to win." Rookie Dwyane Wade led Miami with 21 points but the Heat fell to 2-13 on the road this season. "It's the whole fact of us not coming out and playing the same way we do at home," Wade said. "A lot of teams in the NBA are not playing well on the road." The game was tied, 9-9, 3 1/2 minutes into the contest when a 3-pointer by Miller ignited an 18-6 burst. Gasol capped the run with a three-point play with 3:24 left in the period. "I'm just taking and making my shots," Miller said. "I got some shots and just knocked them down." "It's just a surprise that we didn't play the Grizzlies as well as we could," Miami forward John Wallace said. "We didn't execute well and they played well and hit a lot of shots. We just let them get rolling and once you let a team get rolling at home, it is hard to overcome." Miami battled back and was within 48-44 late in the second quarter. But Swift took over just before the half, scoring six straight points to ignite an 11-1 burst that closed out the quarter. Shane Battier's 3-pointer just before the buzzer gave Memphis its biggest lead of the half, 59-45. Miami shot just 38 percent (30-of-79) from the field.
