Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- The Milwaukee Bucks looked like the experienced team down the stretch Joe Smith and Michael Redd had big baskets late in the game as the Bucks squandered a 15-point fourth-quarter lead before posting a 92-87 victory over the New Jersey Nets. Lethargic for the first 3 1/2 quarters, the two-time defending Eastern Conference champion Nets reeled off a 13-0 run in less than two minutes of the fourth quarter to take an 84-83 lead with 2:54 to play. But the young Bucks fought back and took the lead on Smith's basket with 2:28 remaining. After a pair of misses by the Nets, Redd converted a three-point play with 1:42 to go for an 88-84 advantage. "We maintained our focus down the stretch and we had guys make plays when we needed them," Bucks coach Terry Porter said. Meanwhile, the experienced Nets unraveled down the stretch, missing five straight shots and committing a turnover following their big run. "Guys didn't quit," Nets point guard Jason Kidd said. "We didn't shoot the ball extremely well, but we kept fighting. If the ball bounces our way in a couple of situations, maybe we win this game." The Nets played without center Aaron Williams (groin) and guard Lucious Harris (ankle). They also watched starting center Jason Collins hobble to the bench after playing just nine minutes with an undisclosed injury. "I was very proud of our guys, we played hard and competed for 48 minutes," Nets coach Byron Scott said. "(We were) big-time shorthanded tonight and guys stepped up. I knew we would be a little tired and shots were short because of that. We never quit." New Jersey native Tim Thomas scored 21 points - all in the first three quarters - for the Bucks, who shot 52 percent (37-of-71) in improving to 8-4 at home. Thomas did a majority of his damage in the first quarter, when he scored 16 points while making 7-of-8 shots. He went scoreless in the second quarter, but the Bucks still managed a 42-32 halftime lead. "I just wanted to come out and try to get us going early," Thomas said. "I thought we did a good job with that." For the first three quarters, Kidd, who reportedly blasted Scott following a 47-point loss at Memphis last Saturday, struggled badly, making just 2-of-15 shots through three periods.
