Game StoryBOSTON (Ticker) -- Mike James picked a good time to make his only basket of the game. James' 3-pointer snapped a tie with 50 seconds remaining as the Boston Celtics overcame their lowest scoring second quarter of the season to post an 87-84 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers. James was just 1-of-5 from the field but his lone 3-pointer gave Boston an 80-77 lead, and the Celtics held on to beat the Sixers for just the sixth time in the last 22 meetings. "If I'm going to hit only one shot, at least let it be a big one," James said. "I'm just thankful it went down." Paul Pierce scored 31 points and Jiri Welsch added a career-high 22 for Boston, which has won only three of its last 11 against Philadelphia at the FleetCenter. The Celtics, who were outscored, 26-10, in the second quarter, turned around the game with a 16-0 spurt in the fourth period, taking a 75-70 lead on Pierce's jumper with 4:10 left. "It's one of those wins that was good to have because we knew we won it with our defense," Pierce said. The Sixers answered with a 7-0 run, grabbing a 77-75 lead on Aaron McKie's 3-pointer with 2:53 left but Welsch made a pair from the line to tie it with 2:06 to go. Boston converted 9-of-10 free throws in the final two minutes, including a pair by Pierce that made it 87-84 with nine seconds remaining. The Celtics trailed by as many as 14 in the first half. McKie scored a season-high 24 points and rookie Kyle Korver added a career-high 18 for the Sixers, who were unable to get off a shot on their final possession. Pierce deflected Eric Snow's pass out of bounds with just two-tenths of a second left, not giving the Sixers enough time to attempt a 3-pointer. "Great effort, again, coming back from a large margin and I thought we showed great character," Celtics coach Jim O'Brien said. Korver, who came in averaging only 2.2 points, put on a show, making all six of his shots, including five 3-pointers. His final 3-pointer gave Philadelphia a 68-59 lead and McKie's jumper made it 70-59 with 9:57 to. But the momentum seemed to change when Korver went to the bench just over a minute later. Welsch hit back-to-back 3-pointers to pull the Celtics within 70-67 with 6:36 to play. "He was getting a little tired, so I just wanted to give him a blow and we brought him back," Sixers coach Randy Ayers said. "I thought he got the blow he needed. He hasn't played extended minutes." Vin Baker and Ricky Davis added 10 points apiece for the Celtics.
