Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- It was a frustrating night for star rookie Carmelo Anthony against the Memphis Grizzlies, but he ended it on a high note. Anthony scored on an alley-oop dunk to stop a late charge as the Denver Nuggets held on for a 106-99 triumph over the Grizzlies. It took the Nuggets just 28 games to match their win total of last season, when they were 17-65. The third overall draft pick, Anthony struggled for the second straight game, scoring 15 points on 5-of-17 shooting. His spinning finger roll gave Denver a 101-90 lead with 3:48 remaining, but he missed several shots down the stretch and was whistled for two goaltending violations, the latter on a layup by Jason Williams that made it 103-99 with 56 seconds left. But after James Posey missed a 3-pointer with 29 seconds left, Earl Boykins got the rebound and found Anthony streaking downcourt for an alley-oop feed with 24 seconds to play. Posey had a shot blocked by Nene, Voshon Lenard got the rebound and split two free throws to cap the scoring with 15 seconds left. "A lot of frustration out there when you get beat up like I do," Anthony said. "I have to deal with that though. That's going to come all year." Lenard scored 24 points and Andre Miller chipped in 21 and 10 assists for the Nuggets, who snapped a two-game losing streak. Rodney White added eight of his 10 points in the fourth quarter for Denver, which avoided its first three-game skid of the season. Pau Gasol had 24 points and 14 rebounds to pace Memphis, which dropped its fourth straight road game. Twice in the final minutes, Gasol was whistled for offensive fouls for the Grizzlies, who shot 18 free throws - 11 fewer than the Nuggets. "The calls were very frustrating," Gasol said. "It's frustrating when (the officials) take away the game from you like that. It just shows you that they don't have any respect for you as a player and as a team." "We felt that we competed, in spite of all our problems and our inability to get a call in the third and fourth quarters," Grizzlies coach Hubie Brown added. "It was pretty hard to handle." The Nuggets entered the fourth quarter with an 81-80 lead but never relinquished it. White began the scoring with a three-point play that started a 14-4 run. He added a 3-pointer and a long jumper during the spurt. "Rodney really hurt us off the bench," Brown said. "He got a quick 10 points in 13 minutes. We brought that up before the game in our preparations that he can score a lot of points in a hurry. And he did that tonight." Denver had a 47-36 advantage after a basket by Anthony before Memphis closed the first half on a 16-5 run. The Grizzlies took a 68-63 lead with 6 1/2 minutes left in the third quarter on a technical free throw by Posey before Denver countered with a 12-3 run. The Nuggets won without starting center Marcus Camby (lower back strain) and were outrebounded, 51-37. The Grizzlies were without post players Stromile Swift (stomach virus) and Lorenzen Wright (lower leg injury). "To play Memphis shorthanded like we did, it was a great win," Nuggets coach Jeff Bzdelik said. "We had to fight and scrap for all our rebounds with our big guys out."
