Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- It must be the shades.Joe Smith had 18 points and 17 rebounds as the Milwaukee Bucks defeated another Eastern Conference contender, posting an 83-78 victory over the Detroit Pistons. Earlier this month, Smith suffered a corneal abrasion, forcing him to don goggles that look like sunglasses. The new look has done nothing to slow the veteran forward, who recorded his seventh double-double of the season. "Joe was great," Bucks coach Terry Porter said. "He was active, he really kept things alive for us tonight and did a great job of battling in there and getting rebounds." Michael Redd also scored 18 points and Desmond Mason added 16 for the Bucks, who earned their second straight win over an Eastern Conference finalist from last season. On Saturday, they beat New Jersey. "I didn't know what to expect, it was a new situation for me. I knew we had a nice young nucelus," Smith said. "But I didn't know what to expect, I'm proud of the way everyone has met the challenge. A lot of people picked us to finish on the bottom of the Eastern Conference." Ben Wallace collected 16 points and 20 rebounds, but Detroit dropped its fourth straight road game. "Everyone was kind of lethargic, but Ben put on clinic in the second half, he was phenomenal," Pistons coach Larry Brown said. "But give them credit, they made shots and executed. Joe Smith had a huge game and they deserved to win." "When the score is 83-78, most likely ww have the upper hand," said Pistons guard Richard Hamilton, who scored 17 points. "We are going to score when we score, but we just have to show some toughness and get down and dirty, put someone on the floor once in a while. We haven't done that. In order for us to be a scrappy team, you have to do those things. We haven't done anything." The Bucks led for much of the contest and opened a 75-61 advantage with 7:20 remaining on a basket by Mason. But the Pistons got back in the game, using a 14-4 run, capped by a jumper by Chauncey Billups with 1:20 remaining to pull within 79-75. The Pistons' leading scorer, Billups struggled the entire night and scored just seven points on 3-of-14 shooting. After Redd missed a jumper, Smith secured the rebound and scored inside to make it 82-75 with 59 seconds remaining, all but sealing things. "We just weathered the storm," Porter said. "We talked about it at the half. We knew they were going to make a run at us and they did."
