Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- LeBron James couldn't stop his headache. The Cleveland Cavaliers couldn't stop Tracy McGrady. McGrady poured in 41 points and set up three of Juwan Howard's four overtime baskets as the Orlando Magic continued their rejuvenation with a 113-101 victory over the Cavaliers. James showed why he is one of the most heralded rookies in NBA history, totaling 34 points and six assists. But he wasn't the same after inadvertently getting hit in the face by McGrady on a drive to the basket late in regulation. "We weren't going to win if he's not himself," Cavaliers coach Paul Silas said. "He was until that blow. If he's not himself, it's difficult for us." James was 0-for-4 from the floor with a turnover in overtime. In regulation, he was 13-of-24 from the field and had three of his six assists during an 11-2 run that helped force overtime. "I got hit in the eye," he said. "I just tried to maintain my focus, but I got a headache. I knew my teammates needed me out there on the court. I just tried to do the best I could." Magic coach Johnny Davis knew McGrady needed his teammates as well. Howard stepped up by scoring Orlando's first eight points in overtime, with three of the baskets coming off assists from McGrady. "I just said to myself, 'I'm going to get the ball and I know I'm going to be aggressive, just put the ball in my hands,'" said Howard, who finished with 19 points. McGrady set up a pair of jumpers by Howard, who made it 101-97 with 3:56 left. Howard added a one-hander in the lane before converting another feed from McGrady for a 105-101 edge with 2:12 remaining. In 50 minutes, McGrady went 15-of-29 from the field and grabbed eight rebounds. The NBA's third-leading scorer, McGrady also had 11 assists, one off a season high. "He's making contributions that other players are benefiting from and it's really helped our team," Davis said. "Case in point tonight - down the stretch in overtime, he found Juwan Howard three times for buckets just when we needed them." McGrady put away the game with a pair of 3-pointers - a fadeaway in front of Cavaliers coach Paul Silas for a 108-101 cushion with 65 seconds left and another with 5.1 seconds remaining to finish the scoring. "He is an All-Star," James said of McGrady, who scored 46 points last Christmas in a win over Detroit. "He is a future Hall of Famer. Guys like him you cannot stop, you can only hope to contain him." James also received his share of praise, especially as an 18-year-old who was in high school at this time last year. At one point, he had McGrady smiling and shaking his head following a high-arcing jumper early in the fourth quarter. "He's unbelievable," McGrady said, following the first career meeting between the two. "If he continues to work hard and stay hungry, it could be ugly. It's scary how good he really could be." Drew Gooden added 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Magic, who are 7-3 following a franchise-record 19-game losing streak. They are 7-12 since Davis took over for fired coach Doc Rivers. "A great win for us tonight," Davis said. "Another confidence booster, another step for us as we try to rebuild and restore what's important to us, which is to have respectability in the NBA and to win basketball games." Carlos Boozer had 18 points and 19 rebounds for the Cavaliers, who were seeking their first four-game winning streak in two years. They had won two straight away from home following a franchise-record 34-game road skid. "We are coming together as a team," James said. "We know what to do down the stretch and are able to withstand their runs. We have had opportunities to win at the end of regulation."
