Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Jason Kidd's ability to score clutch points against the Detroit Pistons saved the New Jersey Nets. En route to his his fifth triple-double of the season, Kidd made six consecutive free throws in the final 73 seconds as the Nets held on for an 82-79 victory over the Pistons. Kidd led New Jersey to a sweep over Detroit in the 2003 Eastern Conference finals, burying a game-winning shot in Game One at the Palace. He torched the Pistons on their home court once again, posting 24 points, 12 assists and 11 rebounds for his 55th career triple-double. "From the start of the game you could tell Jason was into this one," Nets coach Byron Scott said. "He had his mind to where he was going to do anything possible to make sure we were going to win this game, and he just did an excellent job for us." The Nets got the lead for good, 76-75, on a jump hook by Richard Jefferson with 1:42 remaining, and Kidd sank two free throws 29 seconds later. Richard Hamilton answered with a jumper for the Pistons, but Kidd again was unshakable from the line with 16 seconds to play. After Detroit's Ben Wallace followed in a miss by Hamilton, Kidd capped the scoring with a pair from the stripe with 10 seconds left. The Pistons had a chances to tie the game, but Chauncey Billups missed a pair of 3-pointers in the final five seconds. "I felt real good on the first look," Billups said. "The second one didn't feel that good. That's how it is I guess. It's either you make it and you go into overtime and you can win the game or it's all over. I can't complain about it." Jefferson finished with 27 points and eight rebounds for the Nets, who won for the eighth time in their last 10 games to move a season-high two games over .500. "It was a gutsy win for this team," Scott said. "We came in here and beat a good team, and at this point, this may have been the best win of the season for us." "I'm not trying to fill up the stat sheets," Kidd said. "I'm just trying to make the plays when they present itself. We made free throws and stops when we needed them." Kenyon Martin had 11 points and 11 rebounds and Jason Collins grabbed 12 boards as New Jersey held a 53-44 edge on the glass. "We got killed on the boards, especially when both teams were struggling to shoot the ball," Pistons coach Larry Brown said. "I just don't know what the answers are except we have to keep plugging and being consistent about how we rebound the ball." Hamilton scored 20 points and Wallace had 12 and 18 rebounds, but Billups made just 5-of-15 shots en route to 15 points. The Pistons shot just under 38 percent (31-of-82). Detroit scored a season-low 12 points in the first quarter and managed only 27 in the first half - also a season worst. But the Pistons bounced back with 31 points in the third quarter to erase a 10-point deficit. "I thought we did some good things in the second half," Billups said. "The first half was horrendous, we just couldn't make any shots. I thought that second half we got aggressive. If we could have done some of those things in either one of those two first quarters, we might be talking about something else."
