Game Story

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Keith Van Horn, Allan Houston and the New York Knicks snapped out of a funk while extending a funk for the Memphis Grizzlies. Van Horn collected 28 points and 13 rebounds and Houston added 23 points as the Knicks handed the Grizzlies a season-high fourth straight defeat, 98-94. "If you look at the final score, it's only a four-point game," Grizzlies coach Hubie Brown said. "But we all know they dominated the game." "There was good energy out there on the court," Knicks coach Don Chaney said. "I saw it when guys came off the floor. There was good spirit." Reserve Frank Williams and Kurt Thomas added 18 points apiece for the Knicks, who had lost nine of 12 but shot 52 percent (38-of-73) and never trailed. Williams, who played 25 minutes, surpassed by one his previous career-high point total and added six assists. "He made a real good case (for becoming a starter), he really did," Chaney said. "I thought he played very well tonight, very well. He got tired, he's not used to getting big minutes and I think that will come. I think he is playing well enough to be considered (as a starter)." "Frank Williams just absolutely abused us on the pick-and-roll," Brown said. "He would get the ball down low and they would lay it up in front of our rotating big men." New York held just a 91-89 lead before Williams made a layup with 39 seconds left. Houston, Van Horn and Williams made 5-of-6 free throws in the final 22 seconds to help New York close out the game. "We told ourselves that we're not going to let this one get away," Williams said. "We've been in this position many times and we let the games get away." "We held on," Van Horn said. "We've played a lot of good games this year that we haven't won because we haven't done the things we need to do at the end." Pau Gasol had 20 points and Jason Williams 18 for Memphis, which had not lost four in a row since a six-game skid from March 12-23. New York held a 49-30 lead after a layup by Van Horn with 4:05 left in the second quarter before settling for a 54-43 advantage at the break. The Knicks took a 76-67 lead into the fourth quarter. "We were disappointed with our entire effort," Brown said. "For us coaches, that was the worst first half of the season." "We dug ourselves a big hole by getting down 19 points," said Grizzlies guard Bonzi Wells, who had 12 points off the bench but made only 6-of-20 shots. "It's tough to dig yourself out of that kind of hole."
