Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Rick Carlisle lost his composure on the court because of the referees, then lost it after the game because of his team. Carlisle ripped into his players, especially forward Ron Artest, after the New Jersey Nets held on for an 82-75 victory over the Indiana Pacers, who have lost consecutive games for the first time this season. Carlisle was ejected late in the third quarter for arguing a foul on star forward Jermaine O'Neal. He was hardly calm after the game, ripping the Eastern Conference-leading Pacers and Artest, who did not play after halftime. "Ron Artest did not play in the second half for conduct that was detrimental to winning," Carlisle said. "We're a team right now that has forgotten who we are. Winning isn't easy. We're young and immature as hell. "As head coach, I was hired to bring this team to a championship level and it can't happen unless 12 players, three guys on the injured list and four coaches do it the right way." Artest scored just three points on 1-of-6 shooting in 13 first-half minutes, then argued with coaches about his shot selection at halftime. "There is times when you have to make a stand and the soul of the team in more important than one guy's agenda," Carlisle said. "We're a team, quite frankly, that doesn't know what the word sacrifice means." "Everybody comes in and takes bad shots at times, but I thought things got better as the half went along," Artest said. "The coaches and I argued at halftime because they thought something was wrong with me, but nothing was. I was angry. I just wanted to get back in the game." The tirade may have stolen some attention from the Nets, who defeated the Detroit Pistons - the third-best team in the East - on the road Friday before rolling at Conseco Fieldhouse. "I think we proved we're still the better team in the East," Nets coach Byron Scott said. "We strive to play for 48 minutes and we played the better basketball tonight. Our energy was high tonight and I think we're starting to prove we're growing as a team. We're feeling pretty good. " Jason Kidd recorded his second triple-double in as many nights with 16 points, 14 assists and 10 rebounds and Kenyon Martin had 23 points and 13 rebounds. It was Kidd's 56th career triple-double and his league-leading sixth this season. "A perfect 10," Scott said. "He's had two fantastic games. He's been all over the floor." New Jersey led by as many as 16 points but was clinging to a 77-75 edge with 61 seconds left after Reggie Miller buried a 3-pointer to cap a 16-2 run for Indiana. Richard Jefferson, who had 20 points, responded with a clutch jumper with 40 seconds to go. Kidd stole the ball from Miller at the other end and split two free throws with 31 seconds left. He added a free throw after Miller was called for a technical foul. Miller missed another jumper before Kidd capped the scoring from the line, sealing New Jersey's ninth win in 11 games. The Nets moved a season-high two games over .500. "The big thing is that we are getting stops and executing better on offense," Kidd said. "Everybody is getting their confidence back. We seem to be getting in a rhythm right now. We still believe we are the best team in the East. We still think others are going to have to take it from us." Al Harrington scored 22 points and Miller, O'Neal and Austin Croshere added 13 apiece for the Pacers, who shot just 36 percent (28-of-77), including 5-of-21 3-pointers. They committed 18 turnovers leading to 20 points for the Nets.
