Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Jamal Crawford made sure the Chicago Bulls did not repeat their season-opening defeat. Crawford scored a career-high 42 points to power the Bulls to a 100-86 victory over the Washington Wizards, avenging a loss in their season opener. Washington steamrolled Chicago, 99-74, at the United Center on October 29, a game in which Crawford totaled just 12 points. But he matched that total in the first quarter of the rematch. "Tonight my teammates gave me easy shots," Crawford said. "It feels good, but it is more important to get the win. I am just going to take what the defense gives me." "The thing about scoring is that you want people who are efficient scorers," Bulls coach Scott Skiles said. "Jamal had a great shooting night by anyone's standards. That is something you constantly have to talk to young players about." Crawford shot 16-of-27 from the field and handed out six assists as the Bulls won their second straight. Corie Blount added 12 points off the bench and Antonio Davis had 11. "My teammates did a great job of finding me," Crawford said. "I am not doing anything different." Larry Hughes scored 22 points and Etan Thomas had 10 and 10 rebounds for the Wizards, who lost their fourth straight. Washington had a 61-59 lead with 3:43 left in the third quarter, but Chicago used a 23-3 run, bridging the final two periods, to build a 82-64 cushion with 9:39 remaining. Crawford had 12 points during the spurt. "I did not do the right play calling," Wizards coach Eddie Jordan said. "I did not call a good game tonight. I didn't make the defensive changes that might have made a difference." Crawford's previous career high was 33 points, set most recently on April 15. The point total was the most by a Bull since Jalen Rose scored 44 at Houston on March 16, 2002. Chicago was outshot 41 percent (39-of-96) to 43 percent (35-of-82) and was outscored in the paint, 48-34. But the Bulls had 17 steals and converted 20 turnovers by the Wizards into 33 points. Chicago was better with the ball, amassing 27 assists against 12 turnovers. Rookie Kirk Hinrich had just five points on 2-of-10 shooting but led the Bulls with 11 assists. "I missed more shots than I wanted to, but I made good decisions and I made good passes," Hinrich said. Chicago got off to a strong start and led for most of the first half. But Washington opened the third quarter with a 13-4 run and built its biggest lead, 58-51, with 7:28 left.
