Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- When it comes to watching Earl Boykins produce big games, the Golden State Warriors have firsthand experience. Boykins collected 13 points and a career-high 13 assists off the bench to spark the Denver Nuggets to a 103-79 rout of the Warriors. Boykins played 68 games for the Warriors last season and sparked a handful of comebacks wins, including one against the Nuggets. But after averaging a career-best 8.8 points, he signed as a free agent with Denver. Facing the Warriors for the third time this season, Boykins helped the Nuggets overcome an awful first quarter. They missed 18 of their first 22 shots and fell behind, 26-12. "We were able to establish the pace we wanted to after the first quarter," Boykins said. "When guys are running up and down the court like that, you are going to get a lot of assists." "Our bench, Earl, Rodney (White) and Chris Anderson, especially in the first half, they did a great job of getting us back in the basketball game," Denver coach Jeff Bzdelik said. "(Boykins) was doing a great job of distributing the basketball." The Nuggets had 33 assists, committed just nine turnovers and got 45 points from their bench. "Their role guys hurt us tonight," Golden State coach Eric Musselman said. "Chris Anderson and Rodney White came in and gave them a lift, and Earl Boykins set the tempo." The 5-5 spark plug helped Denver escape the early hole and hit a jumper at the first-half buzzer to give the Nuggets a 50-47 lead. "He was great," Denver guard Andre Miller said. "The more assists, the better. He played some great team basketball and made some good passes." Denver improved to 19-11, a season after winning just 17 games. With seven players scoring in double figures, the Nuggets also moved eight games over .500 for the first time in nearly 14 years. They are off to their best start since 1989-90. Coming off impressive wins over the Los Angeles Lakers and Sacramento Kings, the Warriors shot 38 percent (31-of-82) and allowed the Nuggets to shoot 56 percent (39-of-70) after the opening quarter. "It was very frustrating," Warriors guard Jason Richardson said. "We didn't have the energy tonight. They never gave up, they never hung their heads and they won the game. They kept fighting, that's all there is to it." After scoring 38 points in the second quarter, the Nuggets kept it going in the third. They opened the second half with an 8-0 run, then grabbed a 71-55 lead on a 3-pointer by Voshon Lenard 5:01 to play.
