Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Shaquille O'Neal helped snap the Los Angeles Lakers out of their holiday funk. O'Neal scored 22 points to lead seven players in double figures and pulled down 16 rebounds as the Lakers pulled away for a 105-82 victory over the Boston Celtics. Los Angeles lost four of its previous six games, a slump that coach Phil Jackson attributed to the holiday season. It also coincided with the absence of injured forward Karl Malone, but O'Neal dominated inside, making 6-of-10 shots and getting to the free-throw line 20 times. "Shaq was the focal point tonight, obviously," Jackson said. "We were looking to exploit the fact they like to front the post. They bait you to throw it in." Derek Fisher added 15 points off the bench and Devean George chipped in 14 for the Lakers, who avoided their first three-game losing streak in just over a year. "We had a little bit more movement," O'Neal said. "We were more active, especially on the defensive end. We're going to be just fine." "Slump? Lakers? It didn't look like a slump to us," Celtics coach Jim O'Brien said. "They beat the living hell out of us tonight. If they were in a slump, they look to be out of it now." Gary Payton had 13 points and six assists, Kobe Bryant managed 11 points despite 5-of-18 shooting and Slava Medvedenko and reserve Horace Grant scored 10 apiece. "We haven't had that kind of balance for a long time," Jackson said. "It was a nice breakout game for us." Los Angeles built a 13-point cushion in the first quarter and led virtually throughout. But the Celtics climbed within 51-48 on a jumper by rookie Marcus Banks just over two minutes before halftime. The Lakers answered with a 14-1 run bridging the two halves. After Los Angeles closed the second quarter with a 7-1 burst, O'Neal scored the first seven points of the third period to open a 64-49 lead. "Those guys were pushing me around, they did whatever they could," O'Neal said. "Yeah, Phil did stress the guys get the ball to me, but a couple of times, I had three guys on me, sometimes four. They were daring us to shoot." Paul Pierce scored 24 points, but Boston was outrebounded, 55-35, and fell to 1-2 on a four-game road trip that ends Monday at Golden State. "We're not at that level yet," Pierce said, referring to the Lakers. "We're trying to get to that level, trying to play at their level, we just aren't consistently playing at a high level. When you watch the Lakers, they consistently play at that level." Vin Baker added 13 points and six rebounds and Banks and Chris Mihm each had 11 points off the bench for Boston, which shot under 42 percent (30-of-72) and committed 23 turnovers. "We had way too many turnovers and just an overall poor defensive effort by our ballclub," O'Brien said. "If you turn the ball over 23 times, you're not going to win many ballgames against good basketball teams."
