Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Stephon Marbury could not be stopped. Marbury scored a season-high 40 points in a terrific all-around game, lifting the Phoenix Suns to a 113-105 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers. An All-Star point guard, Marbury made 15-of-23 shots while collecting nine assists and five steals. In his 11th career 40-point game, he destroyed Clippers guards Marko Jaric, Doug Overton and Keyon Dooling as he came within three points of his best output with the Suns. "I've been hitting my shots as of late," Marbury said. "I haven't been pressing as much as I normally do. We haven't been playing well as a team. Right now, we're just getting back to where we have a lot of confidence on the offensive end. I'm just trying to stay in my groove." "He just killed us on pick-and-rolls," Clippers forward Corey Maggette said. "We did a lot of scouting on what he was doing, but he hit some big shots even when we did trap him." Marbury, whose career high is 50 points with New Jersey in February 2001, scored 43 vs. San Antonio on November 29, 2002 and against New York on February 14, 2003. Marbury scored 22 points in the first half, helping Phoenix to a 58-51 lead. He added 16 in the third quarter, when the Suns built the advantage to 18 points. "He's capable of that most every night, (but) that's a little over the top," Suns coach Mike D'Antoni said. "Tonight he was unbelievable. Usually he's really, really, really good." The outburst helped the Suns snap an eight-game road losing streak and improve to 4-7 under D'Antoni. "I know that we've definitely been in a bind and going on this road trip that we got coming up, it's very imperative for us to get started early," Marbury said. Maggette scored 26 points, Quentin Richardson added 24 and 12 rebounds and Elton Brand 24 and 11 for the Clippers, who have lost two in a row at home following a five-game winning streak at the Staples Center. Despite Marbury's big first half, the Clippers were still within 60-54 early in the third quarter. Marbury scored six points in a 14-4 burst that built the lead to 74-58 midway through the period. "When someone gets going like that, there's nothing you can really do," Richardson said. "He's a great player. He can do that to anybody in the league." With 3:11 left, Marbury launched a 35-footer that banged in, keeping the lead at 83-68. "He was basically unstoppable," Brand said. "That one 3-pointer was a 35-footer, almost. He was hot. I haven't seen too many players get on a hot streak like that." "Throughout the game, he was killing (them), but when he hit that one from real deep, I said, 'It's going to be a long night for the Clippers,'" Suns guard Joe Johnson said. Marbury had just a pair of free throws in the final period, when Penny Hardaway scored 10 of his 18 points to prevent the Clippers from getting closer than nine. Shawn Marion scored 17 points for Phoenix, who shot 53 percent (46-of-87) to overcome a 48-33 deficit on the backboards.
