Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Ron Artest has gotten back to finishing what he starts. Artest shook off early foul trouble to score 16 of his 18 points in the second half, lifting the Indiana Pacers to a 92-89 victory over the Cavaliers. On Saturday, Artest was benched for the second half by coach Rick Carlisle for "conduct detrimental to winning." Two nights later, he was pulled from the starting lineup for missing that afternoon's shootaround, scoring 18 points off the bench. Artest was back in the starting lineup, matched up against teenage rookie phenom LeBron James. He picked up two quick fouls and spent most of the first half on the bench, making just 1-of-5 shots. The Pacers trailed, 47-43, at halftime but took control in the third quarter behind Artest, who scored 13 points and held James to two. "I already had three fouls in the first half, so it was hard to get me the ball," Artest said. "Then I pretty much tried to give the team a lift." "The third quarter killed us," James said. "They just made shots and we didn't make shots." Indiana took a 76-65 lead into the final period and was nursing an 87-84 advantage in the final minute when Artest took a cross-court pass from double-teamed Jermaine O'Neal and drilled a 3-pointer. "JO kept getting triple-teamed and that's how we've been playing throughout this whole season," said Artest, who made 5-of-11 shots in the second half. "I thought Ron Artest showed great patience and poise tonight," Carlisle said. "He was out of the game in the first half with fouls and then in the second half, he had a lot of energy left and went out there and played a very smart, very aggressive game." O'Neal had his fifth straight double-double with 21 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks for Indiana, which has won eight straight in the series and 11 straight visits to Cleveland dating to April 18, 1998. Matched up against one of the best defenders in the NBA in Artest, James had 22 points and 10 rebounds on his 19th birthday. But he managed just seven in the second half as he was roughed up by Artest. "He had 15, then he had seven, so we just had to pick it up defensively," Artest said. "That guy is tough, but I don't think nobody can be stopped." "He's grabbing and holding and (James is) letting him get away with it," Cavaliers coach Paul Silas said. "LeBron had to push him off and stand up to him in his face and say, 'If you do it again, we go to war.' But he isn't there yet." Artest had three steals, including one after two free throws by Zydrunas Ilgauskas had pulled Cleveland within 85-82 with 2:29 to go. It led to a thunderous dunk by Al Harrington at the 1:47 mark. Harrington scored 17 points and Jamaal Tinsley added 11 and nine assists for Indiana, which won despite shooting under 39 percent (33-of-85) and taking a 45-33 beating on the boards. Carlos Boozer collected 17 points and 11 rebounds for Cleveland, which committed 18 turnovers and forced just seven. That passive play bothered Silas. "I thought they got away with a lot of stuff," he said. "We didn't fight back. I guess that was the disappointing thing. They were grabbing and holding us and I was complaining to the referees. If they're going to be physical, you have to match their physical play, and I don't think we did tonight."
