Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- The Atlanta Hawks started hot. The Washington Wizards finished cold. Shareef Abdur-Rahim had 25 points and 12 rebounds as the Hawks capitalized on a big first quarter en route to an 83-73 victory over the Wizards. Playing the opener of a six-game road trip, the Hawks made 12 of their first 13 shots and built a 29-7 lead less than nine minutes into the contest. "I liked the way we came out, but it's hard to maintain that, because you know every team is going to make a run," Hawks coach Terry Stotts said. "Even better than our start was that we kept our composure and we did not relinquish the lead." Abdur-Rahim scored 16 points and Stephen Jackson and Jason Terry each had 10 in the first half as the Hawks settled for a 54-43 advantage. "I scored in a lot of different ways," said Abdur-Rahim, who made 12-of-18 shots. "I don't think that I took advantage of one thing. I ran the floor, guys penetrated and passed me the ball and I knocked down those shots. I also scored some points in the paint." Washington got back in the game, pulling within 65-60 after three quarters. But the Wizards went over 6 1/2 minutes without a basket to start the fourth quarter, making just 3-of-17 shots in the final period. "We just didn't gave that push," Wizards guard Larry Hughes said. "I've been talking about the six- to eight-point push, and we just don't have it. We had 60-64 in the end of the third quarter and beginning of the fourth. Something is wrong. We need that push of three to four shots in a row, and that is how we are losing games." The Wizards welcomed back guard Gilbert Arenas, who had missed the last six games and 14 of the last 15 with an abdominal injury. But Arenas struggled as he missed 14 of his first 17 shots, finishing with 14 points on 5-of-19 shooting. "I'm trying to take shots that I normally take," Arenas said. "I know that it was a rough one, but it feels good to get back there, play with my team and fight and grunt. I still need to get my rhythm back." Hughes scored 24 points to lead Washington, which has lost five straight games and nine of 10 to fall a season-high 13 games under. 500. The Wizards were sloppy in their latest defeat, committing 20 turnovers that led to 24 points for the Hawks while shooting just 34 percent (26-of-76).
