Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Cuttino Mobley hit six of the Houston Rockets' season-high 10 3-pointers and scored 20 points in an 80-72 victory over the undermanned Philadelphia 76ers. Mobley, a Philadelphia native, connected on 6-of-9 shots from the arc, helping the Rockets make 42 percent (10-of-24) of their 3-pointers. "I thought some (of our 3-point shots) were very good," Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "We took a few too many in transition. When we've shot the three well, we've won." "We didn't play our best," Mobley added. "The Sixers aren't no shabby team, even without (Allen) Iverson." Yao Ming added 21 points for Houston before fouling out in the final minute. Former Rocket Kenny Thomas had 15 points and 12 rebounds for the 76ers, who again were without Iverson, their injured catalyst. Greg Buckner added 13 points and 11 rebounds as Philadelphia fell to 2-7 in its last nine games - all without Iverson. "We didn't get back defensively, and you can't have that on the road," Sixers center Derrick Coleman said. "They came down and made shots on us." Glenn Robinson made just 3-of-15 shots and scored 10 points as the 76ers dropped to 0-4 on a five-game road trip that ends Saturday in San Antonio. Houston opened the fourth quarter with a 12-0 run, building a 70-56 advantage with 9:47 remaining. "That's on me," Sixers coach Randy Ayers said. "I maybe should have had to kill it earlier with a timeout. We had no defensive toughness at all." "I liked the start of the fourth quarter," Van Gundy said. "I thought that group played really well." It was the Rockets' first game since trading popular guard Moochie Norris and forward-center John Amaechi to New York for forward Clarence Weatherspoon. While Amaechi had not played this season, Norris played a key role in recent seasons as a backup to Mobley and Steve Francis. He saw limited action this season following the acquisition of Eric Piatkowski and was averaging 2.7 points and 1.6 assists in 30 games. Francis, a close friend of Norris, wore his former teammate's No. 12 on an armband and finished with 15 points. Both teams had a difficult time handling defensive pressure. Philadelphia struggled at 35 percent (36-of-75) while Houston was slightly better at 40 percent (31-of-77). The Sixers committed 15 turnovers, four fewer than Houston. "We definitely needed a victory," Francis said. "It was important to hold them to a low percentage, even though they had one of their best players out. But that happens all the time." "We knew what they were going to do on offense on almost every possession, so we could predict what position they were going to be in," Yao said. "Of course, they're not going to be as effective without those guys (Iverson and Aaron McKie). We were lucky to catch them at the time that we did." Philadelphia opened the second half with a 7-0 run and took a 39-38 lead. But Houston moved back in front by the end of the period.
