Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- The New Jersey Nets had their first sellout courtesy of rookie LeBron James. The fans got a glimpse of what the home team has been doing for the last month. Before their largest crowd of the season, the Nets pulled away for a 97-82 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers as Jason Kidd scored 26 points. Despite their status as two-time defending Eastern Conference champions, the Nets have struggled at the gate. Lured by James' first visit to New Jersey, 19,968 fans showed up at Continental Airlines Arena. "The atmosphere was there with LeBron coming and we were happy to see the people in those seats," Kidd said. "Maybe we have to lie to the people and say, 'LeBron is coming from here on out.'" Instead of seeing James continue his tear, the fans watched as the Nets methodically won for the eighth time in nine home games and 11 of 14 overall. "I think we are playing better ball then we did a month ago," said Nets guard Kerry Kittles, who scored 20 points. "I think the way we are playing and the energy we are playing with is giving us much more confidence. Our confidence is high right now." James had scored at least 17 points in his previous 12 games. But with Kidd guarding him most of the night, he had just 14 points on 6-of-19 shooting. He also had nine assists, all in the first half. "In the first half, we played hard and I really got my teammates into the game," James said. "I had nine assists at halftime. I was just getting them into the flow. I thought I could just turn it up in the second half." After trailing 43-39 at halftime and holding a 71-63 advantage through three quarters, the Nets used a series of fast breaks to turn the game in their favor. "They shot 35 percent in the first half and in the third quarter they didn't miss," James said. "That was the game." Kidd just missed another triple-double, finishing with 10 assists and nine rebounds in 37 minutes. He highlighted his big night during a third-quarter fast break when he faked a behind-the-back pass and pulled the ball over for an easy basket. Cleveland was within 74-72 with 9:46 to play before New Jersey used a 16-6 run to grab control. The Nets reeled off 12 consecutive points as Kenyon Martin had a three-point play and Kidd hit back-to-back jumpers. Kidd also helped out defensively, limiting James to his lowest total since December 6. James had averaged 23.3 points in December, but the teenager had one his worst games of late, finishing with just four points in the second half. "I just tried to make it as tough as possible," Kidd said. "He's a very gifted player. He makes the game easy. The special thing is he doesn't have to beat you by scoring. He finds the open guy and to have the composure he has at 19 - that's special."
