Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Ben Wallace is having the best offensive season of his career. But it is still the defense he anchors that wins games for the Detroit Pistons. Richard Hamilton scored 26 points and Wallace added 10 and a season-high 22 rebounds for his third straight double-double as the Pistons continued their defensive dominance in a 93-81 victory over the Phoenix Suns. Detroit has held its first 33 opponents under 100 points this season, matching the NBA single-season record set by the 2000-01 New York Knicks. The Pistons extended their league record of 35 straight regular-season game without allowing triple figures. "We were able to keep them from doing a lot of things that they like to do," Detroit forward Tayshaun Prince said. "As a team, defense was there collectively. Whenever they had a little run, we were able to put a stop to it." "(The Pistons) methodically put us to sleep with the slow-down game they like to play," Phoenix guard Penny Hardaway said. "We fell into their trap. That's why they hold everybody under 100 points. You have to do all the right things if you want to beat them." Wallace has averaged less than six points per game during his eight-year career but is nearly averaging a double-double this season. He scored in double figures just 18 times in 2002-03 but has reached 10 points 16 times already this season and has seven double-doubles in his last 10 games. The two-time reigning Defensive Player of the Year has not sacrificed his defense. He leads the league in blocks once again and had three against the Suns, making him the fourth player to block 800 shots with the Pistons. "We have more of an answer on defense," Detroit coach Larry Brown said. "I can't believe how good Ben has been." Wallace grabbed seven of 21 offensive rebounds for the Pistons, who had 19 in the second half to match a franchise record set in 1973. Detroit scored 20 second-chance points and had a 54-34 rebounding edge overall. "We just came out and played tough," Wallace said. "We play everybody tough. Right now, I bounce around and try to keep the ball alive so I can react the way I want to react to the ball. I'm just trying to get my hands on the ball. If I can't do that, then I'm trying to tip it so one of my teammates can get it." Detroit never relinquished the lead after scoring the game's first six points and pulled away by opening the second half with eight in a row, highlighted by a pair of baskets from Mehmet Okur. Chucky Atkins scored 14 points and Chauncey Billups added 13 as the Pistons extended their winning streak to four games. Stephon Marbury scored 26 points and Shawn Marion collected 14 and 11 rebounds as Phoenix had its four-game winning streak at the Palace of Auburn Hills snapped, losing here for the first time since December 3, 1997. "We didn't bring enough fight to the game in the second half," Suns coach Mike D'Antoni said. "We just didn't come out with the necessary energy in the second half to overcome them. We just didn't have quite enough heart to win this game. They are a good team, they played good defense, and we didn't shoot well."
