Game Story

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Bonzi Wells and the rest of the Memphis Grizzlies are feeling a lot better. Wells returned from a concussion to score 21 points as the Grizzlies ended a season-high seven-game losing streak with a 100-88 victory over the Utah Jazz. Wells came off the bench to make 8-of-16 shots and hand out six assists as he made his return from a slight concussion suffered in Monday's loss at Indiana. He took an elbow to the face from Jeff Foster that bloodied his nose, left him woozy and forced him to miss Tuesday's loss to Seattle. "I didn't have no concussion," Wells said. "That was a legend concussion. It was a little minor dip into the nose, but in this game, you get that." The Grizzlies had not won since a 97-83 victory over Miami on December 19 moved them to 15-10, the best record in franchise history. They had not lost eight in a row since dropping the first eight games of last season, a slide that prompted the firing of coach Sidney Lowe and the hiring of Hubie Brown. Wells led a balanced attack that saw six Grizzlies score in double figures and the team reach triple figures for the first time since a 105-100 win over Sacramento on December 16. "It feels good to get that mark off our back," said Grizzlies center Lorenzen Wright, who had 12 points and 11 rebounds. "Now we need to concentrate on the basic stuff and not worry about the losing streak. We need to continue to play the way we're capable of playing." "It's always good to win," said guard Earl Watson, who had 10 points and nine assists. "Winning is contagious, just like losing is. This win gives us confidence and gets the monkey off our back." Carlos Arroyo scored 25 points for the Jazz, who put up very little fight in the second half and fell to 4-12 on the road. Utah was outscored, 52-36, in the paint. "I didn't know we were that soft," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "When we went in for a layup, they put us on the ground and made you shoot the free throws. That's part of basketball. They scored 52 points in the paint, and nobody ever got touched." Memphis trailed by 10 points in the first quarter but took the lead for good at 51-50 in the final minute of the first half when Wells found Stromile Swift for an alley-oop dunk. The Grizzlies turned up their defensive intensity in the third quarter, widening the lead to 80-73 entering the final period. A jumper by Matt Harpring, who scored 16 points, cut the deficit to 82-77 before Memphis got its running game in gear and pulled away with a 9-0 run. The Grizzlies held a 33-10 edge in fast-break points. "They came out and waxed our ears pretty good," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "We never did recover. We just kind of rolled over. I was disappointed. that we rolled over in the second half. They just kept bringing it to us."
