Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Theo Ratliff and the Atlanta Hawks used a strong defensive effort in the fourth quarter to extend their winning streak against the Denver Nuggets. Ratliff scored just six points but grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked four shots to lift Atlanta to its sixth straight victory over Denver, 84-76. Stephen Jackson led the Hawks with a season-high 25 points and Shareef Abdur-Rahim added 17 and 11 rebounds as Atlanta won for the second time in three games following a 2-13 stretch. "This win feels good," Jackson said. "We came out and beat a good team tonight. We played four quarters and got it done." "It was a good win," Hawks coach Terry Stotts added. "Top to bottom, it was a good 48 minutes. We got a lot of contributions from a lot of people." Denver led 72-71 with 9:45 left in the fourth quarter, but Atlanta closed with a 13-4 run. A dunk by rookie Carmelo Anthony with 14 seconds to go was the Nuggets' only basket in the final five minutes as they shot 19 percent (4-of-21) in the period. "To hold them to 76 points, eight in the fourth quarter, was a solid effort," Stotts said. Anthony scored 26 points but was one of only two Nuggets in double figures. Earl Boykins added 12 off the bench for Denver, which has dropped three of its last four and has not beaten Atlanta since February 24, 2001. The third pick in the 2003 draft, Anthony had 16 points in the first half, but Denver trailed at the break, 45-42. The Nuggets' starting backcourt of Andre Miller and Voshon Lenard combined to shoot 5-of-22. The Nuggets finished at 38 percent (30-of-78) overall and was a dreadful 1-of-12 from 3-point range. Atlanta also had a 47-37 rebounding edge. "We got bullied underneath the boards," Nuggets coach Jeff Bzdelik said. "We stood around on offense. We wouldn't move, and I couldn't get them to move. We were one and done on offense." Jason Terry was scoreless in seven minutes, but Dion Glover and Jacque Vaughn picked up the slack. Glover scored 12 points in 27 minutes while Vaughn had five and six assists in 33 minutes. "Jacque Vaughn played very well, he is a very good point guard," Stotts said. "I think he likes playing against Denver." Atlanta is 2-1 on a six-game road trip that concludes at Utah on January 10.
