Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Since getting ripped by coach Rick Carlisle, the Indiana Pacers have taken their frustrations out on the rest of the league. Jermaine O'Neal scored 13 of his 26 points in the first quarter and had 13 rebounds and six blocks as the Pacers extended their winning streak to four games with a 91-84 victory over the New Orleans Hornets. Indiana is unbeaten since Carlisle criticized the team, especially forward Ron Artest, following a December 27 loss to New Jersey. It moved a season-high 15 games over .500 after holding on against New Orleans. "It's a change from how we've been playing," Artest said. "I think it has just taken us a while to get into a rhythm. We just finally give 100 percent for the full 48 minutes." O'Neal made 6-of-9 shots in the first quarter and Reggie Miller added nine points on 3-of-4 shooting as the Pacers jumped out to a 29-10 lead. Indiana made 11-of-19 shots in the opening 12 minutes while holding New Orleans to just 5-of-20. "They did a lot, we did nothing. We didn't show up," Hornets guard David Wesley said. "They got a big lead on us, gave themselves a big cushion and it was an uphill climb the rest of the night." The Pacers led by as many as 23 points and held off a late rally by the Hornets, winning for the 11th time in their last 13 home games. "We're on a good run right now," Carlisle said. "I thought we picked up our game early tonight and got going in the first quarter. We kept our heads in it and did what we had to do to win." In a game that featured 61 fouls and a lot of physical play, tempers flared early in the fourth quarter when Indiana's Al Harrington got into a shoving match with New Orleans forward George Lynch. Lynch tackled Harrington near the Pacers' bench and a fight ensued, with players from both teams forming a pile. Lynch and Harrington were ejected along with Hornets center Jamaal Magloire, who jumped into the melee. "It was two aggressive teams that got into a scuffle," Carlisle said. "It's two competitive teams in a high-visibility game and things will escalate." Point guard Jamaal Tinsley collected 18 points and nine assists and temporarily has his job back as Indiana deals with injuries to Kenny Anderson and Anthony Johnson. Baron Davis scored 35 points on 12-of-25 shooting but committed eight of 18 turnovers for New Orleans, which completed a 2-2 road trip. "We just did not come out ready to play," Davis said. "We didn't come out with any passion or intensity (like) we normally do. We can't afford to get down like that and expect to win a basketball game against a quality team like the Pacers." P.J. Brown collected 13 points and 14 rebounds but made only 5-of-15 shots for the Hornets, who shot 37 percent (28-of-74) from the floor, including 6-of-22 from 3-point range.
