Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Los Angeles Clippers coach Mike 
Dunleavy made a wise decision when he brought Keyon Dooling in
as a defensive replacement for the final 10 seconds.

Dooling came out of nowhere to block a potential tying layup by
Gary Payton as the Clippers snapped a six-game losing streak
against the Los Angeles Lakers with a 101-98 victory.

Elton Brand contributed a season-high 30 points, 15 rebounds and
five blocks for the Clippers, who had lost 12 of their previous
13 games when hosting their co-tenants at the Staples Center.

"This was a great win for us," Brand said.  "The game was very
competitive and our intensity was up.  We played defense well
tonight and played hard down the stretch.  It's positive to play
well in a tight game."

After Corey Maggette, who had 16 points and 10 rebounds, split a
pair of free throws to give the Clippers a 100-98 lead with
10.2 seconds left, the Lakers called timeout and Dooling came
off the bench.

Derek Fisher found Payton wide open under the basket, but
Dooling swooped in and blocked his layup attempt off the glass
with three seconds left.

"The Lakers executed that play well," Dooling said.  "They set a
back screen on me.  Fortunately, I was able to get up, contest
the shot and get a piece of it."

"I put him in because of his athleticism," Dunleavy said.  "It
was a tremendous block.  I wanted an athletic guy in there to
defend that type of play."

Payton disagreed this it was a clean block.

"It was goaltending," Payton said.  "The ball came off the
backboard.  It's whatever.  (The referee) didn't make the call,
he just didn't make the call.  It's something that just happened
in the moment of the game.

"We ain't going to get calls for I don't know how long. So I
ain't going to argue about the call. It's just that we ain't
getting calls and we just gotta fight through it."   
Brand grabbed the rebound, was fouled and split two free throws 
with 1.7 seconds left.  After another Lakers' timeout with
eight-tenths of a second remaining, Payton sent a desperation
3-pointer off the backrim at the buzzer.

Payton had a tough game, scoring 10 points on 5-of-17 shooting.

"(The shot) looked good, but things are going bad for us right
now and the shot just didn't fall," said Payton, whose team has
lost six of nine.  "(The Clippers) played well and you have to
give them credit.  Brand played well and they hit shots.  They
are improving."

Kobe Bryant scored a season-high 44 points and grabbed 10
rebounds for the Lakers, who were playing without injured big
men Shaquille O'Neal and Karl Malone.

"It's a learning process of losing two guys like Karl and Shaq,"
Payton said.  "We got to understand, we're not going to be with
these guys for awhile.  We going to have to get it together
quick."

Starting at power forward for Malone, who was placed on the
injured list before the game for the first time in his career,
Stanislav Medvedenko matched a career high with 18 points. The
Lakers were limited to 39 percent shooting (38-of-98), while the
Clippers connected at 49 percent (36-of-74).

Bryant shot 14-of-27 but scored just six points in the fourth
quarter and missed several difficult shots down the stretch.

"It's tough for the other players to function (with Kobe) out
there at times, but there are other opportunities for our guys
to get involved," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said.  "I don't have
any problems with the shots Kobe took tonight.  He only took 27
shots."

The Lakers pulled within 99-96 on a steal and dunk by Bryant
with 1:21 remaining.  Derek Fisher made it a one-point game 30
seconds later when Chris Kaman was called for goaltending.  But
Fisher, who was fouled on the play, missed the free throw and
the Lakers did not score again.
