Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The Chicago Bulls were lucky the Phoenix Suns were shorthanded. Jerome Williams scored 13 points and grabbed 15 rebounds as the Bulls struggled to an 87-82 victory over the Suns. Hours before the game, Phoenix pulled off a blockbuster trade by dealing leading scorer Stephon Marbury and Penny Hardaway to the New York Knicks. As expected, the Bulls took advantage of the depleted Suns at the start, building an 18-3 lead less than eight minutes into the contest. But Chicago squandered the lead and had to hold on down the stretch. "A win is a win," Bulls coach Scott Skiles said. "We are glad to have a win. I felt like we came out with some pretty good energy. We got the big lead. They went zone and we had trouble making shots. Just in general, we are not as sharp and focused mentally as we need to be." "Very ugly win," added Bulls guard Jamal Crawford, who managed just five points. "We struggled at times, they struggled at times, but we got the win. There was no pressure on them." Chicago guard Kendall Gill was happy to just get a win. "We have to get a win any way we can," he said. "We should have blown this team out." Williams led the way and rookie Kirk Hinrich added 19 points for the Bulls, who defeated Phoenix for the third time in the last 10 meetings. Rookie Leandro Barbosa, who took Marbury's spot in the lineup, scored a season-high 27 points. The Brazil native came into the contest averaging just 3.5 points. "It's a difficult situation, but we have to keep going," said Barbosa, whose previous high was nine points. "Steph and I are very good friends. I cried today. I'm very sad." With only eight players dressed, the Suns came out ice cold, missed 12 of their first 13 shots and fell into an early hole. But Phoenix was able to recover, using a 19-6 run to start the second quarter and tying it at 31-31 on a jumper by Barbosa. The Bulls held a five-point halftime lead and took a 62-55 cushion into the final period. "As a team, we just need to keep this type of effort up and keep working hard," Suns coach Mike D'Antoni said. "I'm as happy as one can be with a loss." Eddie Robinson added 12 points and reserve Eddy Curry 11 for the Bulls, who used their depth to their advantage. Chicago held a lopsided 38-9 advantage in bench scoring. Jacobsen and Jahidi White were the only reserves to score for the Suns. Tom Gugliotta missed all six of his shots in 21 minutes. The Bulls rebuilt the lead to 71-60 with 8:25 remaining, but the Suns again battled back. They got as close as 83-82 with 21 seconds left on layup by Barbosa, who went 11-of-17 from the field. But Rick Brunson nailed two clutch free throws with 16 seconds to go and Casey Jacobsen missed on a 3-pointer, sealing it for Chicago.
