Game Story

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- David Wesley rediscovered his shooting touch against a team that couldn't shoot. Wesley scored 20 points and backcourt mate Baron Davis also had a big game as the New Orleans Hornets coasted to a 97-87 victory over the Washington Wizards. One of the Hornets' better offensive players, Wesley managed just 13 points on 4-of-19 shooting in his last two games. But Wesley found his rhythm against the Wizards, going 7-of-13 from the field in 27 minutes. "It's nice to have a game like this where a team doesn't play very good defense and you kind of get a rhythm," Wesley said. "I didn't feel heavily guarded that much at all tonight. I got some really good looks." Davis was even better as he scored 28 points and handed out 10 assists for the Hornets, who never led by less than double digits after the 10:23 mark of the second quarter. While Wesley and Davis had their offense going, the Wizards were struggling in losing for the 12th time in 14 games. They got off to a rough start, shooting just 33 percent (13-of-39) in the first half and falling behind, 49-32. Larry Hughes scored 15 points for Washington, which shot just 39 percent (32-of-83) overall. The Wizards shot 33 percent in Tuesday's lopsided loss at San Antonio. "It's just real frustrating," Hughes said. "It's past frustrating, actually. We're just not in rhythm. We're not in sync with the game." "What's happening is that we are not hitting shots," said Wizards center Brendan Haywood, who scored 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting. "We are getting good shots and not converting them, and anytime you don't hit buckets in this league you are going to struggle." The Wizards struggled from outset, managing just one basket in the first 7 1/2 minutes in quickly falling behind by double digits. They were able to battle back within 21-14 after one quarter. Darrell Armstrong scored eight of his 14 points in an 18-5 surge to open the second quarter that gave the Hornets a comfortable 39-19 advantage. Davis had five points in the burst. "Our first unit came out with great energy," Armstrong said. "We didn't score the way the way I know we can in the first quarter." "We had a good second quarter," Hornets coach Tim Floyd said. "The second unit really got us going." Jamaal Magloire added 10 points and 13 rebounds for New Orleans, which shot 46 percent (36-of-79) and forced 19 turnovers. Davis' double-pump basket gave the Hornets their biggest lead at 88-65 with under six minutes remaining.
