Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- The Detroit Pistons had not won seven straight games in nearly 12 years. It only seems like it has been that long since an opponent scored 100 points against them. Richard Hamilton scored 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting as the Pistons routed the Houston Rockets, 85-66, for their first seven-game winning streak since March 2-14, 1992. Tayshaun Prince added 13 points and 10 rebounds for Detroit, which extended its NBA-record streak of holding foes under 100 points to 38 games dating to last April. "It's great," Hamilton said. "We're really starting to play with a swagger. We're sharing the ball, and most importantly, we're having fun." Houston tied its franchise record-low point total, set vs. Miami on December 21, 1996 and matched vs. Portland on April 8, 2003. The game was tied, 22-22, before Elden Campbell made a layup with 8:05 left in the second quarter to begin a 12-0 run. Prince ended the burst with a dunk with 3:38 to go in the half, which ended with Detroit holding a 44-30 lead. The Pistons, who had lost seven of nine before their current streak, extended their advantage to 58-36 when Ben Wallace split a pair of free throws 5:04 into the second half. They led by at least 16 points thereafter. Detroit shot just under 40 percent (31-of-78) from the field but won with stifling defense, which forced both Cuttino Mobley and Maurice Taylor into 2-of-12 shooting. Steve Francis and Jim Jackson scored 15 points apiece to pace Houston, which shot just 33 percent (24-of-72) from the field as it had a three-game winning streak snapped. "We weren't as determined to win as we have been for most of this year," Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "Detroit played really hard and we missed a ton of shots, were outrebounded, missed free throws and turned it over. We just didn't compete hard enough, prepare well enough and we got into foul trouble." Yao Ming had four points on his first two touches but was blanked thereafter and sat all but the first five minutes of the second half. "I played players that I thought deserved to play," Van Gundy said. "They really changed the way I was able to attack the basket by having (Mehmet) Okur and then Campbell come hard at me," Yao said. "I just didn't play well. The first two times, I found my open spots, but then I got way too hesitant." Yao had collected 22 points and 20 rebounds in an 86-80 home win over the Pistons on December 6. "You know what he did to us down there, so we wanted to get him out of his comfort zone tonight," Pistons coach Larry Brown said. "I thought Memo (Okur) and Elden did a good job of pushing him off the block and getting him out of his game." "(In Houston), I thought I was playing good defense against him, and he was just making baskets over me like I wasn't even there," Campbell said. "I felt like canceling Christmas if he was going to do that to us every night. Tonight, we did mostly the same things, but he missed a couple and they stopped going to him, which was very nice." Pistons rookie Darko Milicic, the second overall pick in the draft who had scored just five points all season, had six in the final six minutes on a pair of dunks and a spinning baseline layup. "He was terrific," Brown said. "He was tired by the time he got his warmups off, and by the second trip down the floor, I thought he was going to die. But he did some nice things out there. He just needs practice time and experience. I was happy for him tonight."
