Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Dale Davis had plenty of energy despite spending an entire day getting to Chicago. Davis and Vladimir Stepania combined to key a late run as the Portland Trail Blazers held on for a rare road victory, an 87-78 triumph over the Bulls. Davis did not make the trip to Chicago with the team because a rare snowstorm in Portland, which forced the postponement of Tuesday's game and prevented him from getting to the airport on time. The veteran forward made it to the United Center just minutes before game time and did not start but made an impact late in a tight contest. He finished with eight points, 10 rebounds, six assists and five blocks in 29 minutes. "It was a frustrating day. It's actually been a frustrating two days," he said. "But it's all made worthwhile when you have a game like we had tonight." The Bulls had a 63-62 edge with 9:30 remaining before the Trail Blazers reeled off 11 of the next 13 points. Davis and Stepania, who started in place of the injured Rasheed Wallace, each had a pair of baskets during the burst, which gave Portland a 73-65 cushion with 4:39 left. "Dale Davis and Stepania did a great job tonight," Trail Blazers coach Maurice Cheeks said. "They controlled the paint, particularly on the defensive end. They stepped up." "We went to the bench and in a matter of minutes we were down by two," Chicago coach Scott Skiles said. "We could not get the momentum back. We could not get stops and could not get anything going offensively." Derek Anderson and Jeff McInnis scored eight points apiece during the fourth quarter for Portland, which made 10-of-18 shots and 11-of-16 free throws in the final 12 minutes. Anderson finished with 19 points off the bench and McInnis added 15 as the Trail Blazers improved the Western Conference's worst road record to 2-13. "We know we're a better team, we need to win on the road more often," Davis said. "Hopefully, this is the first step." Stepania had nine points and 12 rebounds as Portland overcame a rare poor performance by Zach Randolph, who managed seven points and six boards. "It was a total team effort," said Portland forward Ruben Patterson, who had eight points and 10 rebounds. "When guys go down, all the guys have to step up. We knew Rasheed wasn't going to play, so we just had to go out and play hard and play aggressively." Jamal Crawford scored 21 points and Jerome Williams collected 14 and 11 rebounds for the Bulls, who lost for the ninth time in 13 games. Kendall Gill added 16 points and Antonio Davis grabbed 15 rebounds as Chicago shot just 32 percent (29-of-90) from the floor and were outscored from the line, 23-15 on their home court.
