Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Ron Artest and the Indiana Pacers handed the Dallas Mavericks a rare and thorough beating on their home court. Artest collected 26 points and 11 rebounds and played typically tenacious defense to help the Pacers beat the Mavericks, 92-80, and extend their winning streak to seven games. Reserve Al Harrington had 16 points and 10 rebounds and Jermaine O'Neal added 16, nine and four blocks for Indiana, which outscored the up-tempo Mavericks on the break, 25-4, and held them to 37 percent shooting (32-of-87). "I really don't know what to say except that we played a team that totally dominated us," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "We struggled in the lane to score and I certainly want to credit their defense that was outstanding." Held in check by Artest, Michael Finley had a season-low five points on 2-of-10 shooting for the Mavericks, who entered the contest with the league's second-best home mark (16-2). Antoine Walker also had a season-low five points, misfiring on nine of his 11 shots. "We play defense. That's what we play first," Artest said. "We always get stops and then worry about offense later. We look for quality holds. Most of their guys can create and take the ball to the hole. We put pressure on them." The Pacers trailed, 50-46, early in the third quarter before embarking on a 23-6 run, taking the lead for good, 53-50, on a 3-pointer by Jamaal Tinsley with 9:21 remaining in the period. Artest capped the burst with a shot from the arc that made it 69-56 with 3:28 left. Tinsley, who was held out of Indiana's starting lineup because he was late to practice with car trouble, had 11 points and a season-high 12 assists. He was on the bench as Dallas jumped out to an 11-0 lead in the first 3 1/2 minutes, but he entered the contest and calmed the Pacers down, pulling them within 26-23 by the end of the quarter. "I thought our bench helped us hang in there during the first half and we stayed within a couple points at halftime," Indiana coach Rick Carlisle said. "In the second half, defensively we did a better job. They missed a few and we were able to get a lead and finish it off. It's a great road win for us against a team like Dallas that has really played well at home this year." Dallas' Dirk Nowitzki scored 20 points but just three after halftime. Reserve Antawn Jamison chipped in 19 points for the Mavericks, who had won their previous four home meetings with the Pacers since a loss on January 10, 1998. "You think Nowitzki played well because he made 20 points?" Nelson said. "He missed 13 shots and wasn't much of a factor, I didn't think. Finley has a bad game. Jamison was the most effective; at least he had good numbers. But I don't think he played well. I think all the starters played poorly. We simply couldn't get anything going." The Mavericks scored just seven points off 18 Indiana turnovers, while the Pacers scored 14 points off 15 Dallas giveaways.
