Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- The Seattle SuperSonics used some unexpected production in the middle to light things up from outside. Centers Calvin Booth, Jerome James and Vitaly Potapenko combined to score 36 points as Seattle put on an offensive clinic in a 122-116 triumph over the Memphis Grizzlies. Rashard Lewis scored 26 points and Brent Barry added 18 as Seattle shot a season-high 57 percent (44-of-77) from the field. Vladimir Radmanovic chipped in 17 and Ray Allen 15 as the SuperSonics came within two of matching their season high. Booth started and scored just six points, but James came off the bench to score 16 and Potapenko contributed 14, including five in the final 2 1/2 minutes. "I thought it was a solid effort, but our big guys played their best game collectively," said Seattle coach Nate McMillan, whose team made 9-of-16 3-pointers. "Calvin got off to a pretty good start, Jerome came in and gave us some solid play and then Vitaly came in and played well." "It was totally unexpected, but when you play them as soft as we played them, you will get absolutely destroyed at the position," Memphis coach Hubie Brown said. The Sonics were quick to point out that the production in the pivot was a welcome sight. "It helps to see each of our guys at the center spot contribute," said Barry, who had 10 assists. "Calvin really kept us in the game in the first quarter by making some plays. Then Jerome comes in and plays effectively and Vitaly made some big free throws and some plays down the stretch." "(The centers) got themselves in great position to score," Allen said. "That's what we've been working on. When that pick comes, you need to roll to the open area and you've got a shot." James Posey scored a season-high 25 points for Memphis, which had not allowed more than 121 points this season. A 17-footer by Mike Miller ignited a 16-2 burst that gave Memphis a 31-14 lead with 4 1/2 minutes left in the first quarter. The SuperSonics chipped away and were within 65-60 at the half. The Grizzlies still had an 82-76 advantage when four straight points by James sparked an 24-8 burst that gave Seattle the lead for good.
