Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Eddy Curry finally had the impact on both sides of the floor the Chicago Bulls were expecting from the start of the season. Curry scored 19 points and made a pair of huge defensive plays in the final minute as the Bulls held on for an 89-84 victory over the New Orleans Hornets. Curry had one of his worst games of the season in Friday's loss to the Portland Trail Blazers, scoring just two points on 1-of-9 shooting in 17 minutes. Following the game, coach Scott Skiles and teammate Kendall Gill criticized the lack of effort displayed by the 21-year-old center, who redeemed himself against the Hornets. "I was definitely conscious of going to the hole and trying not to get my shot blocked like the other night," said Curry, who made 13-of-14 free throws. "I felt good out there. I backed off the conditioning today and I was able to get my legs back for the game." Curry scored eight points during a 38-point second quarter for the Bulls, who had a 58-38 halftime cushion and led by as many as 22 in the third quarter. They had a 19-point lead early in the fourth before Hornets guard Baron Davis scored 14 of his 29 points in the final 10 1/2 minutes. New Orleans pulled within 85-84 with 57 seconds left after Stacey Augmon made 1-of-2 free throws, missing a chance to tie it for the first time since the first quarter, Jamal Crawford, who scored 20 points, responded with a tough fadeaway jumper over Darrell Armstrong to give the Bulls an 87-84 edge with 27 seconds remaining. Curry came up huge on New Orleans' final possession, blocking P.J. Brown's layup before forcing Davis into a wild 3-pointer in the final seconds. "(Curry) was much more aggressive," Skiles said. "He had not blocked a shot since (December 12) and he had a huge one at the end of the game. He was just more active." Rookie Kirk Hinrich scored 11 points and Jerome Williams had 10 and 10 rebounds for the Bulls, who won for just the fourth time in their last 21 meetings with the Hornets. "We were just too casual in the first half," New Orleans coach Tim Floyd said. "That's not the way you're going to win. When you go down 20 in this league, you have to play almost perfect to get back in." Chicago shot just 38 percent (32-of-84) but made 21-of-23 free throws - including 11-of-11 in the fourth quarter - and held a 54-46 rebounding advantage. It scored 23 points off 20 offensive rebounds. Davis made just 11-of-27 shots and 4-of-12 3-pointers for the Hornets, who shot just 35 percent (31-of-88) overall and 7-of-23 from the arc en route to their third loss in four games. "They had the energy tonight," Davis said. "That was the difference in who was going to win the game. Energy was the key, We just didn't come out with the fire and passion to win that good teams need in this league."
