Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Chauncey Billups and the Detroit Pistons extended their winning streak but saw another streak come to an end. Billups tied a career high with seven 3-pointers and scored 27 points to lead the Pistons to their eighth straight win, 115-102 over the Dallas Mavericks. "This is a glimpse of what we can do," Billups said. "We're not going to play like this every night, but we know we can do it." Detroit had not won eight consecutive games since an 11-game run from December 26, 1990-January 17, 1991. But the Pistons had their NBA-record streak of holding opponents under 100 points come to an end. Detroit foes had not reached the century mark in 38 games since April 13, when the Pistons posted a 110-107 overtime victory over Memphis. The Pistons had held opponents under 100 points in their first 36 games this season, another record. "I don't really think we're going to miss it," Detroit forward Ben Wallace said. "The only streak we care about is the other one." Chucky Atkins added 18 points off the bench while Wallace contributed 17 and 13 rebounds for Detroit. Steve Nash paced the Mavericks with 18 points and 10 assists, but it wasn't enough to prevent them from losing for the sixth time in seven road games. Dallas is 4-13 away from home and 20-16 overall. It did not lose its 16th game last season until March 16. "Defensively, we've really struggled this year," Nash said. "We haven't been able to keep ourselves in any road games. Our road record is the difference." The teams battled to a 55-55 halftime tie, but the Pistons started the second half with a 17-6 run and built a 72-61 lead midway through the third quarter. Dallas had no trouble scoring points, placing five players in double figures. Rookie Marquise Daniels and Shawn Bradley had 16 points apiece, Antawn Jamison added 15 and Dirk Nowitzki contributed 14 and 15 rebounds. But the Mavericks allowed Detroit to shoot 51 percent (40-of-78) and make 13-of-20 3-pointers. "We made shots," Pistons coach Larry Brown said. "They zoned us a lot. But Chucky got us going and then Chauncey got hot. I thought for the most part, our shot selection was pretty good." "I really thought we made them play tonight," Mavericks coach Don Nelson said. "We made them step up and they just made the shots when they had to. They had the hot hand all night." Billups hit 7-of-10 3-pointers while Atkins connected on 5-of-8 to help the Pistons stretch their winning streak against Western Conference foes to six games. Detroit is 7-1 at home against teams from the West. Tayshaun Prince's layup gave the Pistons their biggest lead, 111-92, with 2:58 left in the fourth quarter. But a 3-pointer by Tony Delk with 55 seconds remaining put Dallas at the century mark. "Against a Dallas team like this, it's hard not to allow over 100 points," Prince said. "It's just going to happen with the shots they take and the players they have and especially the way they run their offense." Daniels got his first career start, replacing fellow rookie Josh Howard, who sat out with a strained left hamstring.
