Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Paul Pierce scored 27 points and Jiri Welsch fell one shy of a career high with 21 as the Boston Celtics edged the Houston Rockets, 97-93, for their third straight win. Walter McCarty also had 21 points for the Celtics, who snapped a five-game losing streak against the Rockets with their first win in Houston since January 18, 1996. The Celtics used just eight players but continued to get key contributions and won for the fourth time in five games. "This was an exciting game to be a part of and we just beat a quality opponent on the road," Boston coach Jim O'Brien said. "They are a very tough team to hold down." "It's a good win," Pierce added. "It's good for us to come out on the road and get a good W against a good up-and-coming team. It's tough to come out here and win because they have a good team." Jimmy Jackson tied a career high with 26 points to go with eight rebounds for Houston, which had won four of five and fell to 12-5 at home. Jackson had a big night, but fellow frontcourt starters Kelvin Cato and Yao Ming struggled, combining for 10 points on 3-of-9 shooting. "They just did a good job of fronting the post and they just played a great game overall," Houston coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "We didn't defend and our turnovers were at a high rate and we played with zero team energy." "First of all, we didn't come in prepared at the beginning of the game. And second of all, the shot selection was horrible, and at crucial times," Rockets guard Steve Francis added. Houston grabbed a 14-7 lead but trailed after one quarter, 24-20, as Pierce had 13 points in the period. Boston pushed its lead to 39-26 midway through the second quarter and was ahead at halftime, 46-38. McCarty made 6-of-8 shots and scored 16 points in the first half. The Celtics were ahead by 12 points in the third quarter but the lead was shaved to 89-86 following a 3-pointer by Scott Padgett with 1:51 to go. With the shot clock winding down on Boston's next possession, McCarty found Welsch for a 3-pointer from the left corner. Welsch was 7-of-8 from the field and made all three of his 3-point attempts. He was 4-of-4, including 2-of-2 from 3-point range in the fourth quarter. "They have a lot of big, strong guys inside and they really load up to the paint, so I knew I was going to get some looks from the outside," Welsch said. "We wanted to spread their defense and move the ball, and when I got it, I felt comfortable to shoot." "Jiri was shooting good from all over the floor and when he does that, it can really open things up for us and make it hard for our opponents to cover us," O'Brien said.
